The 36-year-old man is accused of kidnapping, assaulting and raping girls between the ages of 11 and 14 in the area from January 2006 to February 20 2011.

He is alleged to have either dragged the girls into open fields, at Thokoza Stadium or into a shack, where he threatened them with a firearm or a knife so they would not try to run away. It is also alleged that the man strangled some of the children, during the attacks.

Prosecutor Joyce Xhakaza read the 121 charges, taking a break in between to take a sip of water. The charges relate to attacks on 35 victims, according to investigating officer Mokopu Maeli.

Members of the ANC women's league picketed outside the court, singing woman empowerment songs.

Their general secretary, Thabisa Makapaka, said: "The women's league says 'no' to the raping of our little angels."

The man will be transferred from Boksburg Prison to Krugersdorp Prison for mental assessment for 30 days.

The trial will resume on July 22 next year in the Johannesburg High Court. - moengk@sowetan.co.za

Now the judges need not throw a book at him, but the entire library, this man is beyond rehabilitation. People like him should spend all their lives in solitary confinement, completely disconnected from society forever
