Robber shot dead by police
A SUSPECTED robber was shot dead and a security guard wounded in a shoot-out during a cash-in-transit heist at a bank in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
The security guards were collecting cash at 11.30am on Wednesday when they were attacked by four men armed with firearms, said Colonel Jay Naicker.
"The security guards returned fire, fatally wounding one of the suspects who had robbed them. The remaining three suspects sped off in their getaway vehicle leaving the money and their dead accomplice behind," Naicker said.
He said police had previously been given the wrong information about the condition of the security guard. The guard was shot and wounded, and not dead as reported earlier.
Police responded to the robbery, spotted the getaway vehicle and gave chase.
"When they ordered the vehicle to stop, the suspects opened fire on police. Police officers returned fire and two of the suspects were wounded in the ensuing shootout," Naicker said.
The two wounded men, aged 29 and 37, were arrested while a third escaped on foot.
They will appear in the Empangeni Magistrate's Court soon.
