These stadia were built to hugely inflated expectations and with grossly inflated costs to local tenderpreneurs. These costs are now to be recovered, but they can't. so this is a desperate attempt to distract peole from the key issue, while claiming that they serve so many thousand people on a regular basis. Have you ever heard of the 'puppydog sale'?
It was first used by a brilliant TV salesman. The idea was that you take the TV home for a week and then decide if you wanted to purchase it or not (yea, more innocent times with less people anxious to just run off with them). Well after the neighbours and friends had seen the prestigious new fangled TV in your lounge, there was no way you could take it back.

Maybe the idea is based on the same principle. If you make it a 'norm' for families to go out every Sat afternoon for (lets say) a month and you make it a special day then the desire to go out is created and they are prepared to pay (in ever increasing amounts) in order to have that fun. Also, by using it for different activities, you encourage marketing people to consider using the 'popular' facility for their activities.

Chancy, but it could work if done right

But what gets me is this, yes DBN is not the best place for some concerts like lil Wayne and such, but then they send Duran Duran and Vanilla Ice our way? Who on earth will go see them? Then they blame the crowed for not buying tickets, but clearly the bands that will work they don't even consider DBN? Kings of Leon, 30 Seconds to Marks, Linkin Park and RHCP will sell out faster then CPT , but they never send big bands this way because of the data collected from smaller less popular acts. Look at Top Gear and what a success that was! We need more of that to make the stadium profitable.

We have few concerts so the hasbeens have a chance to make some moola but the isbeeings can get more money for less journey. We aren't exactly the world leaders in CD sales.

What I would love to see is some band playoffs. In the good old bad old days, we used to have 'garage' bands. Having some of them showcasing their stuff and getting some publicity would be great. Kind of an armature 'oppikoppi'

Daniel, I totally agree. No-one did much market-research here. And the example of bands is a very good one. However, the snag with that one, is that those are not arranged by the municipalities but by Big Concerts who seem to have manipulated themselves into a monopoly, and having done that are passing off has beens at truly ridiculous prices. So for that excellent idea to work, some other local entrepeneurs need first to go into competition with Big COncerts, and then not to wait for municipalities to come to them, but to actively engage municipalities with decent planning, which could bring in a decent act once a month.

How has Big Concerts become so popular? and computicket? They made such a hash of the RHCP ticket sales. I have tickets so I can't complain, but in the end the research they have done was not done properly. They use figures from Duran Duran to justify not bringing 30 second to mars to Durban. Now if I want to do research on apples sales I'm not going to look how well oranges sell... Is that how it works? Must municipalities go to big concerts and ask for the acts?

Daniel: The thing about "jazz lounges" is that they tend to lay on what I would like to refer to as "jazz muzak". That totally directionless wallpaper music the little reflects the notion of jazz as the music of freedom. Generally quite boring regurgitations of classics or else just meaningless decoration. Very little provision is made for the so-called avant-garde, and this is sad, as our country is rich in very sophisticated musicians and jazz-audiences who want more than KennyG or the like, or who want to think beyond African Jazz.

Joburg seems to be moving in on the niche markets now. They have coffee shops doing poetry evenings and 'theme' clubs. It is a lot different in Joeys though. A lot more people, a lot more money and no beach to distract anyone from going out.

The important part is that the stadium managers should think out of the box about who to market to. At the moment they are outside the box but pressed firmly against its sides. It is understandable as a fail is a big risk but, without a bit of risk, we would never progress

Again the seating isn't right for Rugby so in the end what is left to do but really up our soccer team and market them rather. Take all the money going to "subsidies" tickets and help the coaches and players get better known.

You will find more interior in Dbn becoming very almost Bohemian. Hillcrest kloof those places are making a k1lling by becoming very niche. Its nice that we are moving away from what is conventional

DA-DBN-GUY

Moses Mabhida is in my opinion the best stadium in the country, being from Durbs i am a bit biased, but the eThekwinin municipality never did their homework when the okayed the building of the stadium. They never thought of what to do with the stadium after the world cup and now the expect the Sharks to move across. Sharks were open to discusiions before the stadium was being built but were snubbed. The knew that the best supported soccer teams are in Jhb but still went ahead. The stadium is not suitable for watching rugby or cricket fixtures. As for bringing big name bands to Durbs, they dont get marketed as well in Durban as they do in JHB and CPT which is very sad indeed.

The city made the decision to build the stadium amongst opposition from various parties and now they must live with it. I dont see why my tax money should be used to pay for the best unused stadium in SA

Credo

All intellectuals, except the anc, knew that these stadiums would be white elephants after the soccer world cup.

But what do the anc care about how they spend your taxes !!!!! As long as it is not for the poor !!!!!

Only idiots vote for the anc !!!!!!!
