Police in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, claimed they could not attend to an attempted rape complaint one block from their police station because of a lack of transport, according to a report.

The Witness reported that on Saturday, Mthonjaneni Municipality protection services manager Derek Horne heard the screams of two girls and reported the matter to police.

Local police said they could not respond to the complaint because there was no police car available.

Horne apparently told the charge office that an attempted rape was taking place only a block from the police station, but could get no undertaking from police that they would investigate.

Horne resolved to help the girls himself.

"I walked through an open security gate into the building, heading for the source of the screams and saw two young girls, I estimate about 12 years and 16 years old. They had been tied to cement windows, with rope around their hands, and two young men were attempting to rape them," Horne was quoted as saying.

The perpetrators ran off, and Horne helped the traumatised girls.

Captain Tienkie van Vuuren, spokeswoman for Eshowe police, said an internal investigation would be launched into the matter.

Nee,nee this is crap bull.when you go to trainings you don't run in cars but you physically get trained to run after criminals,to jump high walls and fences and this rape was just a block away and you wanted a car to do what exactly.You are just a bunch of lazy people who do not take the law seriously but want to get paid every month for lazying around certifying copies NXA and not dealing with real issues.

Mr Horne thank you for risking your life to save these girls from horror,you deserve a bells

As for the police - their lack of commitment is shocking. Dereliction of duty I say.

I lost faith in our Police long time ago. I know there are hard working and committed SAPS personel out there. Then kubenalezinja ezingafuni ukusebenza. 10111 is just a waste of airtime they put you on hold.

It comforting though that there are still local heroes like Mr Horne.

The SAPS is so useless, all they know is to shoot to k!ll - it was only a block away why didnt they run to the scene...cowards. The whole SAPS is rotten to the core, my sister went to the joburg police station for an affidavit and she was told that there were no pens at the stations and was given directions to the nearest stationery shop which was more than two blocks away - to buy her own pen...talk about service delivery

all they are good at is for arresting us for drunk and driving suspicions and public drinking. if you decide to leave your car and walk then you will be arrested for some stupid charge called "pedestrian danger to him/herself". wtf? esp. sunnyside police.
