More than 800 people had to be evacuated in the early hours of this morning

Two children died when a main water supply pipe burst in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria on Monday, Tshwane emergency services said.

Spokesman Johan Pieterse said it was suspected that the four-year-old and four-month-old had drowned but details were sketchy.

Another person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

More than 800 people were evacuated when the pipe burst at about 1am on Monday.

He said about six shacks had been erected directly above the pipes which ran underground at the informal settlement.

The two children were inside one of these shacks when the pipe burst.

Rand Water officials were at the scene as well as the department of housing.   Hans Strijdom drive was closed from Hinterland Avenue to Pretoria Avenue.

Traffic would be affected as the road would only be opened much later on Monday.

Motorists were advised to take other routes.

people must learn gore not every vacant land is acessible. services that are used every day of our lives including electricity, water and other infrastructure have servitudes in vacant lands all across SA. people just like playing ignorant to some issues. I am sad for the loss of the 2 children and may their little souls rest in piece. however south africans must start taking responsibilities for the actions they take. building a shack on top of a waterline is like put your ass on an atomic bom. that pipe is in a vacant land for a relevant reason. there are habitable areas all over the country hence we have Town planners and urban planning managers looking out for these plans of putting people in safe habitable areas. let us stop pointing fingers until knowing the facts.
