DURBAN is due to host the Brics Summit in March next year.

PLEASED: Zweli Mkhize

The Brics nations are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The annual summit would be attended by their presidents and government and business delegations.

KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize said the event was an incredible honour, especially since South Africa was the newest member of Brics.

He made the announcement at the annual KwaZulu-Natal Growth Coalition business breakfast in Durban this week.

Department of International Relations spokesman Clayson Monyela said the exact dates of the summit had not yet been finalised.

I see we are hosting all these big events, but as a Country are we moving, are we changing the lives of the poor or are we happy for the few that are rich. KZN is one of the poorest province, people stay in mountanious ares where services are zero, they dont know clean water, no electricity and yet some people enjoy the fruits of freedom.

South Africa’s acceptance as the 5th BRICS member of the world emerging economies is a foreign policy coup for President Zuma. It offers an opportunity to steer the country to economic prosperity. The BRICS further offers an extensive lucrative market for our goods and services and will help meet our New Growth Path and Industrial Growth Plan targets with the view to diversify the economy and create more job opportunities. BRICS will bring positive outcomes in the fields of agriculture, and social justice. Brazil has, under its former president Lula Silva lifted millions of poor people out of poverty, the ICT and mathematics are areas whereby India has invested massively and SA could benefit greatly. To meet our targets identified in the National development plan, SA needs such skills urgently.

Already SA has made inroads into some private sectors of the BRICS countries. High profile investments such as SASOL’s coal to liquids plants in India and China, SAB Miller also in China, Naspers has stake in one of Brazil’s media establishments, standard Bank as well as AngloGold Ashanti. SAA has 2 flights a day from OR Tambo International Airport to Sao Paulo which also service passengers from neighboring states such as Mozambique and Angola. SA is already receiving Foreign Direct Investment from Brazil’s Vale, India’s Tata and Mahindra motors.
The establishment of the BRICS bank will benefit SA and other member states to pool resources for infrastructure development and lend among themselves during difficult financial times. Should the issues of trade barriers be addresses promptly, SA could double her trade with other member states to around $500 billion by 2015.

For South Africa to join BRICS was a wise decision as it boosts prospects for economic growth in the midst of the European economic meltdown since the EU is an important trade partner for SA, it is better to have a viable alternative, which is BRICS which includes Brazil, the country that has just surpassed United Kingdom to be the 6th largest economy in the world. Brazil is continuing to grow and is asserting itself in the global political sphere and SA needs such partners in our march towards growth and prosperity.
