This is taking it too far. Really now. Stop trying to blame cigarette companies for inducing smoking, I started smoking because I wanted to be naughty not because some advert told me to do so. I'm an ex smoker been smoking for 10 years and finally gave it up, but we can not afford to push the boundaries so much. Its just not cricket.

Yes, I am a smoker and no, I wasn't very supportive.

Reducing salt and sugar is senseless in a country where nutritional labels are only read by the 'posh' housewives and the average person just ADDS salt or sugar according to their taste. Nobody is going to prevent Sophie from putting a weeks worth of salt into her afternoon pap every day

My comment on the salt was that the bakers were not complaining due to process (salt is a yeast retardant) but rather due to marketing - bread without salt in it tastes like cardboard.

Being exposed to hypertenson due to both my parents being sufferers, I supported him. I'd rather eat cardboard tasting bread than increase my chances of suffering from HBP.

As for smoking, with all due respect I dont understand why you people smoke. it just does not make sense to me. There is a lot of damage it does to the human body than you can compare with alcohol ( taken in moderation of course)....I enjoy my sigle malt by the way

Why do you like bread without salt, we do not understand that, but smoking is an addiction. Do you think people snort cocaine or inject heroin into their system because it is pleasant? People smoke because they do. You will not know because you do not smoke, and I applaud you for the fact that you do not, but do not begrudge those who do simply because you do not understand.

I feel it is a waste of money( number of smoke breaks per day) when i go to a club or a bar I am made to be a passive smoker ( potential cancer for me). there is just no benefit in smoking

Banning it completely would have been great.

Its the ignorant way of going about it even I dare say the apartheid view of something. We do not like it so ban it. Doesn't work like that my friend. Money talks and smoking generates way to much income.

You can get low sodium bread now.
Genetically, all people of Africa are susceptible to high blood pressure and diabetes. Salt is only ONE factor in it all, You may want to try green tea, include avos in your diet and cut out any mutton - works like a dream for high blood pressure as well as cholesterol.

Who wants to live for ever? I am not interested in lying in bed one day dying of nothing. As long as it is my lungs that I am turning into a well tarred highway, it really isn't anyone else's problem. ..... I'm more of a blended scotch malt person myself - don't like the very peaty back taste.

I know, it genertes so much money hence the counterfeit that is flooding the market. banning it will not happen in a thousand years. If I were to be minister for a month closer to budget time, I was going to advise Pravin to raise the tobacco sin tax by 40%.

I say ban it all the same, tobacco, Alcohol, Zolo and all stimulant substances ban them all, stop being hypocrites acting like tobacco is the only health harming substance, alcohol is affect people more than tobacco, you don't see people smoking tobacco and becoming more violent or out of charactor compared to alcohol, infact alcohol is the biggest culprite in SA.

ANd smokers will gladly pay it. It is the same concept as why are you filling your car with petrol? Why not some radical bio fuel? We are as hooked on fuel as smokers to cigarettes. Your argumentation is based on feelings and not facts. A non smoker will always want to ban smoking a smoker always will defend it me a non smoker can not say no to smoking as it will be hypocritical of me. Think friend think!

Unfortunately, mutton is the worst meat of all. The fat on other meat is on the outside and can be removed but mutton fat is inside the muscle so it can't be. A little bit of what you fancy is never bad for you but just keep in mind that moderation is key.

Exercise is great for most of what ails you. Again, moderation is key as your blood pressure (along with your heart rate) rises during exercise so, if you do have very high blood pressure, it isn't a healthy idea. If you don't have high blood pressure then it will help to prevent you from getting high blood pressure. Being overweight also pushes up your blood pressure so exercise is key for prevention.

I suffer from the opposite. I have low blood pressure. It means that I will probably live longer but the dizzies from standing up sometimes gets a bit irritating

DR MOtsoaledi should be focusing on improving the standards of our hospitals and service delivery. We smoke our own money and we dont get it from corrupt government officials and the ANC. Or maybe tobbacco producers should approach him with a bribe.

For those of you calling for a total ban, forget it. The government makes billions per year on taxes from tobacco.
If they should ban it totaly, about 15,000 people will lose their jobs.
Government cant afford that to happen

The figure will be closer to 45,000 jobs as we have packaging plants in SA and they will close down if a total ban is imposed. That would affect everything from paper to printing and labour to exports. The cigarette companies have threatened to close up shop and move before and it isn't like they don't have other countries crying for their patronage.

Part of that is very scary as they literally hold the country to ransom but luckily they don't flex their muscles very often and only when left with no alternative (unlike Cosatu) so it is a fine line that needs to be taken here.
