@Tsek

Hahaha..I am suprised as well.

They have just created a window shopping opportunity for human traffickers.Hillbrow is not a suitable place to raise kids, period. Unless if you don't have choice.

I hope it comes with some serious security or it will be hijacked by the drug lords like everything else in Hillbrow

As a matter of statistical fact, more then 50% of all residents in the Hillbrow area are South African.

It is saddening to see how South Africans have given up on the country. I happen to have attended this opening, it is in Braampark, a part of Hillbrow that is undergoing some massive reconstruction. You should all give yourselves time to go visit and see what a positive outlook backed by South African industry can do to reshape a broken space.
Hillbrow has thousands of buildings that are unoccupied or illegally occupied, and hopeless perspectives and comments loaded with blame such as the ones above will never launch a new day.
At some point the city needs to be reclaimed, all those buildings that lie empty there are an opportunity to resolve the joblessness and entrepreneural issues that riddle this nation.

Just saying...

If I may ask, what is the percentage of South Africans living below the poverty datum line and how many of them are living in Hillbrow...

In the early 1980's I used to live in Sunnyside and we often went to party in Hillbrow. I wouldn't go near either area today as they are little more than ghettos

@MommaC

Sunnyside and Hillbrow are ''worlds'' apart kilometres wise, were you grooving that far from Sunnyside. The Joburg City Centre hijackers are now many in numbers in the suburb that I loved few years back, Kensington. You can not even go to relax at Rhodes park freely now. They are everywhere.

LOL
Back then Sunnyside was all students and young families I used to finish working behind the bar and walk home at 2am with not a single worry of being attacked. Now I wouldn't take my chances walking through there in broad day light.

@Nomadic...very objective comments you made.Don't pay any attention to the naysayers,they sit behind their computers in their plush suburbs and imagine the worst of the CBD without lifting a finger to make a change.The drug lords in hillbrow mainly occupy two buildings namely mariston hotel and high point where they stash their stock.If those two buildings are sealed ,the drug dealers will be crippled.You know what is so funny,i actually feel safer in hillbrow than glenvista where i stay because of the low crime rates.

I also like what they have done with yeoville over past two years.One thing that is certain over time ,Yeoville and Hillbrow will stabilize and be returned to it's former glory.There are of couple foreign African cultural groups of which i am a member of one who is doing their bit to contribute to the restoration of those areas.The major problem which we still face now is population control and unscrupulous white landlords who exploit the situation of those areas for personal gain.I am hoping the Government can seize these properties where the owners have refused to take care off.

Crime has reduced drastically over the years in hillbrow because the criminals have shifted their focus to boom gate suburbs whey they believe they can score big.

I am actually impressed with the reclamation of the CBD which is ongoing and it is only a matter of time before all drug dealers are driven out.There are a couple properties which i have taken interest in around the braamfontein ,CBD and hillbrow especially the american styled lofts.They are good investments for the future.

It is the same thing i witnessed last year when i was in Newyork,i visited Harlem and the Bronx and i could not believe the reconstruction that was going on there.
