Sometime we miss the point. Let us not fight the problem but the cause of the problem. The problem can just be controlled. I can tell you now Mr. Zuma, and your minister that this operation you are taking will never solve the problem of violence in the Western Cape and nationally. The province is flooded with social and socio-economic problems, drugs, poverty, racism etc. If the government comes with a national strategy to have 70-80% of its budget focused to addressing social and social-economic issues and the rest of the budget in controlling problems then I tell you our situations will not change. For example, if AIDS kills people n the government spends millions buying medication and people still die, then why still spend soo much trying to cure AIDS instead of trying to prevent the source of AIDS then people will never stop dying. Prevention is better than cure.
People are morally corrupt. Our thinking is defiled by our social backgrounds and our actions are fuelled by the anger these social backgrounds have imposed on us. As long as the government does not come with poverty eluviation programmes, as long as there are drugs in our neighbourhood, and most importantly as long as our leaders and the correctional service is corrupt and incompetent, as long as we as people don’t take steps to correct our ways of life and our morals then the violence will never stop. There is no province I haven’t been to in South Africa, and I can tell you now the Western Cape is one of the most racial provinces in this country. Racism is condoned in this province. Coloured families condone black hatred, blacks despise coloured people in return and even worse there is too much division amongst blacks in the Western Cape. Cultural differences bleed the province. The Western Cape is by far the one place where drugs are easily accessible. This explains why the province has the highest growing percentage of underage drug usage. In this province drinking is a fashionable thing, you see young beautiful girls and boys looking 10 years older because of drugs and alcohol abuse.
This is not a coloured or black thing, but its an issue that is affecting Western Cape townships not only lavender parks and hanover park mentioned in this article. There is violence in khayelitsha, gugulethu, delft, makhasa and everywhere.
I have spent most of my life moving from province to province, but what I see in the Western Cape is totally shocking. I have seen things in all provinces but the Western Cape is extreme. So our government has let things go too far and now it finds it difficult to control what is happening on the ground. So for me the strategy is to start where they should have and correct things from the ground and go up.

this has nothing to do with deploying a multi-disciplinary solution to this problem. this is ANC's way to try and win the Western Cape back. come 2014 campaigns the ANC will use the crime situation in the WC as a way to win over the masses. again the point is indeed Western Cape is one of the provinces with great economic segregations, the socio-economic imbalances in that province are there for everyone to see. People, the president is right, the job is for police and mainly the community....if the community really wants to live in peace, they shouldnt protect these bustards, some of them are their children, just because they bring blood money to their parents and parents start protecting them. It costs the government money having the police there all the time and how much then if troops are deployed, Police should just do their job on getting rid of these gangs, and i bet most of them are in partnership with these gangsters to get a cut. As far as i know the matter is not a national security threat, if it was, then troops can be deployed. Cape Town needs to work out a plan on how to curb this, and if needs it to be they can bring over other police members from other provinces and help with the situation. I mean for fucks sake look at the caption of the picture it says a home of a millionair gang leader. Good day

It is nice when people comment with something that they hear over the news or paper, I am living in Cape and I witness these killing on weekly basis. I have a friend working as a paramedic in killing that happen about two - three months ago he was on call and he told me the story. the ambulance was called and while he arrived on scene with other guy to attend the guy that was shoot. The other members of the gang arrived and killed the guy that was attend and other five guys just next to them. The police we around in the area as they were called but to his suprise no one was arrested.

Two weeks back the guys sturbed seven people killed four our of seven, the police were called and they didnt arrest the guy. It was on a Suday and people organise the meeting on the Monday so that they can attack the killer, that was only then when the guys was arrested on a Tuesday.

So fellow people please things are bad Here

I live in Gugulethu and take a taxi from Nyanga to work every morning and believe me we constantly live in fear and most of the time people are robbed and killed. Atleast if police can patrol around the location in the morning and afternnon it would be better.

I agree with you Mr. President. There are plenty police officials, including metro officers, who sit and do nothing while innocent civilians perishes. Some police personnel are just on standby doing nothing while innocent civilians are being executed. Why don’t you deploy those?

I wonder who plans the police personnel’s daily tasks. These are the people that must be contact first to see if they are not over deploying their personnel to unnecessary areas. I see police everyday loafing around chasing ganja smokers and other civilians who are not even a danger to society and yet too much noise is made on this.

This is just another political stand to discredit the current government.

Police personnel are afraid of death, they must just say so. But watch them when they arrest an innocent armless civilian.

Where are these active citizens who close their curtains when they hear an innocent child screaming?

Governments don’t raise gangsters, its community members who raise them.

Can this issue stop being a political issue and it being a humanitarian issue? People are dying and the government is once again showing itself as an uncaring state.

South Africans including their leaders lack political maturity. In the Favella's of Brazil the same drug and gangsterism had been happening for years and through a multipronged approachby the National, Provincial and Local governments they have eventually managed to seize the situation of drugs and gansterism because the common cause was the country and NOT a political party or power.

Common South Africa, show some teamwork to solve your problems and challenges because if you don't EVERYBODY will be a loser at the end.

The government disbanned the child protection unit. Crimes against children are out of control
The government disbanned the specialized drug units. Drug gans are out of control
The government disbanned the gang violence specialized unit. Gans violence are out of control
The government disbanned the commando units at farms. Farm murders are out of control.
The government banned the use of rubber bullits. Now the police have only live ammunition to use.
