HALF of all crimes in South Africa happen in Gauteng. Now national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega has given the provincial police management a month to come up with solutions to change this statistic.

First make sure there are competent and uncorrupt people in charge. It all comes down to the quality of people and recources. It is pointless asking a 100kg man to run 100ms in 10 seconds because failure is guaranteed.Report Abuse

This is not the time to think about solutions but rather forcefully deal with criminals. Rattle them out of their hiding places and ensure that no place is safe for them and only then, will the police be dealing with crime. Whilst at it, deal with men that abuse their women as chances are that they end up killing them anyway.Report Abuse

Yhu this is shocking why don't you start with the police them selfs...how credible is the starts how can 50% of crime of the country happen in one area or is it Gautengers report crimes because they have cope shops nearer than places like Kuruman!!!!Report Abuse

The problem with foreigners is a small percentage in comparison to problems with our own people. Pointing fingers is our biggest problem and we as a nation need to admit that we have done things wrong and we need to fix them. Blaming a minority group is not helping matters at all. No country in the world that has no foreigners, so deal with it.

Deal with Police who take pribes from the so called Pakistanians in our communities, they have build so many shops that operate until very late, apparently they hijack trucks that delivers food/goods to other businesses, they have storage houses all over, they store these goods there and fetch them for the small stores in the Townships as they need, if only we can stop their business, before we the communities take the law into our hands the better. These Pakistanian businesses are robing the country economic benefits, they tranfer all their monies out of the country, they dont employ locals, because they don't trust them, they are crooks. If Government and the Police do nothing, I see troubles ahead. Please investogate their dealingsReport Abuse

One thing that is working against SAPS is the militarilization of the police. De militirize them, Madam Phiyega because the SAPS' mandate states clearly that they are to serve and protect. Soldiers are empowered by the Defence Act to k.ill in defence of the RSA's soveignty.Report Abuse

this petro dude, he thinks 16 hijackings is an achievement from 25? I should have been 10 or 7, that would have been an achievemnt worth mentioning, 16 is still a lot taking into considerstion of all the police officer who are forever in police stations certifying ID copies, certificates, birth certificates and passports, those people should be out there in the streets, being visible, have you notice Mrs Pyega that you'll soon need to buy around 20xtra chairs per police station? maybe its in the budget for next financial year!Report Abuse

@DandaloSelebi did not "mess up Gauteng" as you wrongly alleged, Gauteng and the rest of the country was messed up long before Selebi became commissioner, he just couldn't fix the mess he found when he came into office. Remember that Selebi served under "The Thinker", "The Intellectual", "The cleverest president SA had ever had". Both Mbeki and Jackie are educated people and they wanted "academic solutions" to SA's crime problem. Mbeki's analysis of crime was very correct, but the academic solutions fell too short of addressing this problem. Enter Zuma and Cele in 2009, 100% Zulu strongmen, guerillas from the bush, not very educated but self-educated anyhow, these two believe in real solutions and none of those Mbeki and Selebi "academic solutions". That is the reason crime declined markedly between 2009 and now, because they decided that fire must be fought with fire at the same time addressing the real underlying causes of crime such as lack of skills, unemployement etc. General Phiyega is an educated person and she must avoid seeking "academic solutions" to South Africa's crime problem. It has been proven that a strong police force with enough fire power can reduce violent crime. There is virtually no academic solution when thugs are carrying guns and shooting up a storm in residential and business areas. Academic solutions will win the war against crime, but a well trained and dedicated police force will win the battles in this long drawn out war. No cop must die with their gun still strapped in the holster, never!

If my memory serves me well, the last Commissioner of Police that came within the ranks of SAPS was George Fivas. The rest that followed were political appointees. Security forces or armed forces like SAPS have rich customs and it is easier for the force to function as a well-oiled machine, if the person at the helm came within the ranks. There is what is knowned as "closing of ranks" in this forces. This means that General Phiyega can be made a failure by internal processes and senior officers in the SAPS, who wants to frustrates her. If people decides to close ranks, they will not co -operate and I guess the SAPS, is not like the SANDF, where one gives an order and if it is not carried out, those in the wrong can be charged, which might even lead to their expulsion.
Unfortunately Gen Cele's involvement or shall we say interest' in the SAPS HQ fiasco compromised his office. By the way, the SAPS, have a procurement officer, so his involvement was a conflict of interest because Roux, is his friend.
My view is that, Let the General, do his job and we must judge her on her performance and not her previous experience as a business executive or lack of experience in terms of police training. Only time will tell as it is still early days.

1. She'll be my hero if she sorts out crime, her appearance is the least of my worries.2. Why must your management come up with strategies, is that not your job - you are showing why people rightfully claim you are not fit for the job.
3. Fight fire with fire (fair and professionally though), even more so than Cele and you'll see results. But I doubt if you will, cause you are a political pawn and needs to keep your masters happy.

JohnStoneSelebi did not "mess up Gauteng"
Oh YES he did.
Selebi pushed to get the police doing border control and not the army which resulted in the borders becoming sieves and the tsotsis taking over
Selebi closed the special units which resulted in the police not being able to cope with crimes they had not been trained to handle
Selebi allowed 'friends' to bypass the laws so that the drug and organised crime syndicates could flourish
Selebi cut the training and entrance requirements for police intake to so low that giving a basic statement to the cops is almost impossible
Selebi promoted friends and family into high position over experienced officers which resulted in people at the top not knowing how to do the job and good cops resigning in droves due to frustration

There is a big difference in pointing fingers and telling the truth, our drug syndicates are foreigners. They run this town through using poor South Africans who also want to make it in the world. U can arrest or clean up the bottom as much as you like but you will never get far as long as the head is still on top, catch the big fish first then the small ones will start evaporating. Amakweja run this country through drug trafficking, take Glen Angliotti for instance's, his also a kwerekwere despite the color of his skin. His known as the drug lord that sold out a police commissioner but we did nothing about him. how pathetic are we as a country.

Crime is out of hand in South Africa. The problem is people with skills are not taken into consideration. There were two persons, a young blackguy and a white man in Tzaneen Cluster who use to make crime stats presentation and their efforts were fruitful. The way they use to present their statistics was so clear that police were able to understand the crime situation in Tzaneen Cluster and that would result in intelligence driven operations and which was bearing fruit. Those two are no longer there, and the police are in the dark in terms of statisics. Operational plans are no longer intelligence driven. National Commissioner, pls take such people into consideration. They will play a big role.Report Abuse

Another deployee minister set out to fail as she clearly has not clue, hence is asking the police for solutions, does she really think if they had solutions they wouldn't have reduced crime activities in GP by now? The uselessness and incompetence of the anc regime is going to take SA and everyone into a dark hole.Anyway the good news is that, sanctions against Zim will be relaxed by the West, that will breath in some much needed oxygen into its economy, at least SAns when you are being reduced into economic refugees by the stupid regime ruling SA aground, you will have a place to run to, neh:-)

@Mygirl I agree partly with the principal teacher scenario, but I disagree on Cele, all that guy did was to tell the police to break the law whilst in pursuit of criminals, or what did you understand 'shoot to k!ll' slogan to be? In SA constitution clearly states that, a person is deemed innocent until proven otherwise in the court of law, so how can guilt or innocence be proven if a suspect is shoot and k!lled on sight? As a direct fo these outrageous utterances by the incompetent minister police think they are the law unto themselves, how many innocent civilians have you read about who were shot and k!lled on spot? the last time I looked SA was not a jungle, we have courts to determine guilt or innocence not police serving as both the judges and executioners cause they are too incompetent to gather evidence to firm up states case against a suspect. Please ask Tatane's widow if you don't fully understand effects of shoot & k!ll suspects. The police in SA are ill equipped even to do the most basics of tasks and I blame the regime for that.

In some parts of the world, to be a police man you must have studied social science or something. You cant solve a problem especially crime if you dont have an academic record of such. You know what I am sick and tired of this country where qualified people and people who have work hard during their schooling days sitting at home while this danda heads and people who dont even know how to read enjoying our taxes.
