Traffic cops patrol on foot

TRAFFIC officers in Merafong, whose salaries were slashed recently without explanation, allegedly also had their patrol vehicles taken away because they do not issue enough fines.

They are now required to cover an area with a radius of 30km on foot, including Khutsong, Welverdiend, Wedela, Western Deep, Fochville and Carletonville.

Traffic officers who spoke to Sowetan on condition of anonymity said they were called to a meeting by their manager, Moses Masalesa, on Monday, and told they would start patrolling the streets on foot.

Another officer said Masalesa had on previous occasions told them he would not allow his performance bonuses to be affected by failure to issue a target of 100 tickets.

Masalesa declined to comment.

Their salaries of R10,000 a month were reduced by between R2,000 and R4,000 in December.

Municipal spokesman Slums Magodielo said the vehicles were withdrawn by management because officers misused them.

He said salaries that were reduced would be corrected at the end of the month.

Well that just proves that the Traffic Department is nothing more than a money making racket and has nothing at all to do with road safety.
