Call made from judge's home on the day he died
THE Western Cape High Court has heard that a call was made from the home of acting judge Patrick Maqubela to the court on the day he died.
The detailed billing was presented during the murder trial of the judge's widow, Thandi Maqubela, and her co-accused, businessman Vela Mabena.
Prosecutor Pedro van Wyk told the court that witnesses were scattered around the country.
Only one witness, Telkom specialist Manie Visagie, was available for yesterday's proceedings as the others had returned home when the trial was postponed.
The significance of Visagie's testimony was that a man, who allegedly pretended to be the judge, phoned Maqubela's chambers at the high court on the day he died.
The trial resumed on Monday after a week's postponement when the widow's lawyer, Marius Broeksma, fell ill.
Maqubela's body was found in his luxury apartment in Bantry Bay on June 7, 2009.
The State alleges he was suffocated, while the defence claims he died of natural causes.

I offering a bet - odds on 1 - 10. Thandi gets a terminal illness as soon as she is convicted. Why do court cases take so long - especially if the police have evidence. Same with the jub jub case. I know that in a civilized we must follow due process but we should not be wasting money om inefficiency.

This is poor reporting, add more flesh to the allegation of someone pretending to be the judge - why do they say the person was pretending to be the judge, eg what is the estimated time of death, what time was the call made. Please Sowetan send a good reporter down there and give a blow by blow account of what the witnesses are saying.Report Abuse
