THOUGH the death of 5-year-old Aphenene Msipha may have triggered the violence that engulfed Soul City informal settlement yesterday, her mother has appealed for calm.
Aphenene died when she was hit by a truck on Monday afternoon on her way home from school on Tudor Road. The incident sparked off violent protests in the area, next to Kagiso township on the West Rand.
Several people were arrested as a result of the violence.
"I understand the anger people are feeling right now, I also feel it. However, I would like this matter to be resolved in a more mature way. Fighting is not going to help us," the girl's mother Mamsie Msipha said.
Aphenene's death came shortly after another child was hit by a vehicle last week. Fortunately the child survived and is reported to be in hospital. Residents are demanding speed humps.

Why was a 5 year old child wondering around on the street without adult supervision? Its like those people who have toddlers not tied into car safety seats whilst they drive around. Can they not see that it is a heartbreak waiting to happen?

Good question MommaC.I always see young children going to school alone everyday and wonder how their parents feel by letting walk alone.

Maezizsto4SureIt makes my blood boil.
A little one like that can't judge car speed or keep attention long enough to be cautious all the time. Not only that but with the number of monsters running around in SA, the chances of her being stalked by someone very dangerous is a big possibility. There are more than enough people in that squatter camp who don't work that they could at least organise someone to watch out for the kids.
I can't imagine the nightmares that poor truck driver must be having.

candiliousWay back in the stoneage when I went to junior school, we had road safety every second Wednesday. Maybe we should start something like that now as the parents are obviously either too lazy or too nyopied up to look after these poor little souls
