Lt-Col Ronel Otto said a 34-year-old man allegedly strangled the old man and also bit him several times on the stomach, in the early hours of Thursday.

Otto said police and paramedics took the 34-year-old man to the WF Knobel Hospital on Wednesday, after they were called to a school about a suspected mentally ill man causing a disturbance.

"He was taken to the WF Knobel Hospital and apparently admitted to the same ward as the deceased, Mr Elias Makololo of Ga-Rapitsi village, Moletji," she said.

She said the man was arrested for murder and was expected to appear in the Matlala Periodical District Court later on Thursday.

Limpopo health spokesman Phuti Seloba said the man had been admitted at the hospital for observation as a requirement.

The family must sue the Department of Health. The arresting officers and the admission nurse should have know better than to put a paranoid schizophrennic in the same ward as a fragile 65 year old. From all of us here at Wes Koppies: "Happy South Africa Day."
