29 stabbings at WCape schools

Twenty-nine pupils have been stabbed on school grounds in the Western Cape in the first half of the year, it was reported.

The Cape Times reported that most of these stabbings were at the hands of fellow pupils.

Education MEC Donald Grant's spokeswoman Bronagh Casey said one of the stabbings, at Beauvallon Secondary School in Valhalla Park, was fatal.

"This year we have had 18 stabbings where the learners have been seriously wounded, and 11 cases where it has resulted in minor injuries," she told the newspaper.

"Unfortunately in communities where gangsterism is prominent, it can sometimes spill into our schools."

She said the department's Safe Schools programme was tackling the problem, with interventions including conflict management and substance abuse help.

Core security infrastructure had been placed at 209 identified schools and 50 additional schools would receive this protection soon.
