Teachers given IOU's instead of pay cheques

A Johannesburg school is struggling financially and has used staff pension monies to keep afloat, according to a report.

Sandringham High School allegedly deducted pension money but did not transfer to pension funds for four months, The Star newspaper reported.

School governing body chairman Wonderboy Peters confirmed the use of pension money to keep the school afloat.

Peters told the daily this was done due to the school's financial problems and that they needed to use the money to pay the salaries of teachers appointed by the school governing body.

According to the report, at least 12 staff members did not receive their salaries for July. They were informed last week that they would be retrenched.

The retrenched staff received "IOUs" instead of their pay cheques this month - a note which said they would be paid once the school "had enough money".

The school is reported to have been struggling financially since its principal Logan Naidoo was suspended in March on allegations of financial mismanagement.

Sandringham High School was once one of the top 500 schools in South Africa.

@WebTeam

if you look into the history of money, the paper we call money (cash) is actually an IOU to some extent. So basically the school is issuing an IOU for another IOU.

By the way Web Team. you have published this article twice on the same page.

This is the reason I'm asking myself over and over again,why Angie is still minister,she is going a terrible job to say the least,but because we have an irresolute president,who dithers when he has to make a decision that is in the Nation's interest,our children are faced with a grim future.

Can we give the receiver of revenue an IOU too?

In that way WE get to keep our hard earned money and the government can sing for their salaries - an IOU should suit them nicely too. Let them FEEL the pain like the teachers do!

I know Angie and his dept messed up Education, but i don't see why she should be blamed for this mess, govt employed teachers are not paid by the schools they are paid by the provincial depts. The teachers appointed by the SGBs are paid by the SGB not govt. In this case we can"t expect govt to increase the school"s subsidy as it will lead to unauthorised expenditure and also be unfair to other schools. Negligent and corruption led to those teacher suffering and the SGB needs to raise funds to pay these eduactors.
