Eina. That picture brings back a few stinging memories.

To be honest, it depends on the child. I just got suborn when smacked. My sister became compliant.

The problem is not corporal punishment, it is the fact that the schools have ZERO tools to use for discipline. Teachers can't use detention, extra homework, staying in during break, manual labour or any other punishment. Even speaking to the parents gets them nowhere.

Disipline is sorely lacking in the majority of schools and something needs to be done urgently!

I however have a problem with who disciplines the child and how it is done.
We have seen numerous cases over the years (under apartheid too) where an ILL-disciplined adults, both male and female, takes his/her temper out on the child inflicting unnessary injury which defeats the whole object, and creates resentment rather than accountability in the child.

Personally I think physical disipline is degrading and humiliating for all concerned - there has to be another way getting through to the children than there are cionsequences for actions.
The ideal is to lay down rules both at home and at school and apply them consistantly!

Children need boundaries (to push) but also appreciate the security they bring. Believe it or not.

SOUTH Africa shot itself in the foot by banning corporal punishment in schools, says ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe.

"I am not going to borrow from a foreign culture to bring up my own kids. As long as we are not allowing a balanced way of bringing up our kid(s) - then we are in trouble."
=======================================================================
@tpaz - you are right, spoil the rod spoil the child.

We(myself and others) have been saying that for a long time. We are not saying beat the kids to death or injure them, What upsets me most is that Mr Mantashe says he has been disciplining his younger children with a switch, but WE are threatened with fines and jail if we do like he does.

Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
Proverbs 23:13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

I bet most of you have got a hiding at school but here you are, you are grown ups. I do admit that other teachers have been doing it too extreme like using fists and claps and dangerous instruments and that is WRONG.

MommaC you are indeed correct
If spanking is used within a nurturing, loving home, it can have very positive results.

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him (Proverbs 13:24).
Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him (Proverbs 22:15).
Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die (Proverbs 23:13).
The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother (Proverbs 29:15).

A switch, hehehehe. That is something more than a belt. I prefer a belt and a stick not a switch. If I remember a certain teacher used to sjambok us with something that looked like... it was a fan belt actually. She called it a switch. If indeed a switch is a fan belt, sorry, I won't use that on my kid; a belt will do just fine. I don't know why she called that thing a switch in the first place.

But, Sir, this statement is patently absurd: "I am not going to borrow from a foreign culture to bring up my own kids." Where does that come from and what are you driving at. What is this ridiculous tendency to blame all aberrations on "foreign influence"? You sound like your North Korean buddies.

At least some people are making sense here today. I discipline my two boys aged 6 and 8 years, when they go wrong and we are best of friends they have come to appreciate what it means to be well behaved and discipline. At the end of term the two boys get letters of commendation for being the best disciplined, well behaved, caring, and most respectful kids in their classes for the past four consecutive years. I trust and I know they will don't bring shame and dishonor to me.I achieved that by discipline at home.

Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

Corporal punishment can be a good education tool, but only if applied by mature, wise, experienced educators. That will actually mean the following, that the Torture Convention that was accented to by South Africa in 1994 be scraped, the Constitution on right of dignity on section 10 should be amended and section 12 on security of a person should be amended! That will mean the Schools Act will have to be amended as well! We will need 75% of the National Assembly and Council of Provinces majority to change the Constitutional clauses and still need adoption by full Parliament to withdraw the Torture Convention and the Convention on Right of A Child as well as the amendment of the Schools Act! That is in brief your International Law for you Comrade Gwede, now do you realize how difficult is it to change all those things, it is very interesting and hopeless to be lead by visually impaired leaders who are suffering from lack of intellectual vivaciousness, Mandela signed for those instruments 15 years ago and he will remain relevant for a long time about corporal punishment in schools which will never resurrect in our country as it is totally unconstitutional!! Constitutional Law 101, for Gwede might be very vital under this kind of circumstances!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a serious note, I think it will be irresponsible to reintroduce corporal punishment in schools. I speak as one who was an educator for five years before pursuing other interests. If indeedd corporal punishment is introduced, it has to be administered by the principal, and in that case the incident must be entered in a log book, which should be monitored by the School Governing Body and Education Department.

Personally I am in principle, opposed to corporal punishment being administered at school. My experience as a pupil was full of incidents where corporal punishment was administered unfairly and under very controversial circumstances. How can I forget the Afrikaans teacher who used to beat us up children every Thursday because it was Donderdag. And then ofcourse during those days were teaching was a calling they were many teachers who were frustrated by their own personal circumstances and would vent their frustrations on innocent kids. The worst situations were those ugly circumstances where the teacher would be pressurising a girl child to either have an affair or sleep with him. If the girl child turned him down he would find every pretext to get at the child. It is wrong for a school teacher to fall in love with a school child let alone pressurise the child. Now in these days of SADTU where teachers do their own thing and are a law unto themselves the reintroduction of corporal punishment will be a disaster.

During my five years as a teacher, my views on corporal punishment changed. The first two years, I applied corporal punishment selectively. However, in the last three years I focussed on motivating children through talking and I never had to administer corporal punishment, not even once. I am convinced that the use of corporal punishment in some circumstances encourages children to resort to violence to resolve their problems.

I am a father now, and my personal experience is that children have to be raised right from the start. While I use corporal punishment in the early years of a child, it is not done out of frustration. The Book of Proverbs that people quote selectively to defend corporal punishment actually puts more emphasis on teaching, instruction and nurturing. There has to be a good reason to administer corporal punishment at home. It cannot be that a parent always resorts to corporal punishment to respond to a child's behaviour.

As for Gwede Mantashe's use of a switch is laughable. Is a switch superior to a belt (which I use once in a blue moon) or a stick. I do not think so! I am alsop pretty sure tha if King Solomom lived today, he would have had a lot to say about a lot of things.

The rod nonsense is not a solution, we have thugs in prison some were students with us and the stick never made them better people, some even ran away from schools and worse still some left their homes. Even before the banning of the corporal punishment my parents were not beating us and mind you my father is an evangelical priest but he never raised a hand on us and every child he has is independent and doing well, we are not spoiled nor are we thugs let alone people who have no respect. The rod nonsense is not helping anyone except terrorised children. There many methods hat can be used to displine a child and teach them that anything they do has repercussions and that works.
