Slain woman's kids destitute

Two North West farm children are facing a bleak future

They lost their mother when she was murdered by her husband, who stabbed her twice in a heated argument in April this year.

Their mother died as a result and their father was arrested for the murder.

The children, aged 3 years and 18 months, were forced to live with their aunt on the same farm.

They do not have birth certificates and are still traumatised by their mother's death.

Their aunt, Kerileng Segomelo, has five children and two grandchildren, who also do not go to school.

They live in a one-roomed house on one of the Rooigrond farms outside Mahikeng.

Segomelo has to take care of all the children, including her sister's two children, on her maid's salary of R400 a month.

The farm owner's daughter, Roelien Jordaan, said she did not know that the children had no birth certificates. But she added that she would help them get the necessary documents and child support grants.

"...who also do not go to school."
- WHY ???

"...on her maid's salary of R400 a month"
- Unlawful. Even with accommodation thrown in it cannot be more than 10% of the salary. Rural area domestic workers salaries are R7.06 per hour. So either she is only working 56 hours in a whole month or she is being shafted

We cry foul that the poor are getting poorer. How in the world don't you get poorer when you are having more kids than you can afford and those kids dont even go to school? When do you end the cycle of poverty in such a situation?

She has too many kids to support so she must work hard to make extra cash and yet my story wont change dear, you know that u r struggling but keeps on making babies, i mean even the grat money is not enough to take care of 1 kid.
