Corruption-convicted top cop Jackie Selebi was allowed to go home at the weekend but would return to hospital this week, according to reports on Monday.

“His doctor gave him the weekend off to be with his family. He will receive dialysis at home,” Steve Biko hospital executive head Ernest Kenoshi told Beeld newspaper.

Selebi was granted medical parole on Friday after serving 229 days of his 15-year jail term.

He had been receiving treatment for diabetes and kidney failure.

Kenoshi said Selebi had not been discharged and would be back at the hospital on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Times newspaper on Monday quoted an unnamed hospital staff member as saying Selebi was “not gravely ill” and that he walked about his ward every morning, “probably to stretch his legs”.

He climbed off his bed into a wheelchair unassisted when released from the Pretoria hospital on Saturday, said the staff member.

His lawyer, Wynanda Coetzee, on Friday said Selebi was “very ill” and should have been granted medical parole long ago.

Weekend newspapers said taxpayers were likely to foot his health bill, which would cost around R25,000 per month. In a private hospital, it would cost about R75,000 per month, Sunday Independent reported.

Selebi also still owes the state about R17 million in legal fees, which he said he would pay back if he lost his case, reported Sunday Independent and Rapport newspapers.

He was convicted of corruption on July 2, 2010 and handed a 15-year jail sentence.

Selebi appealed in the Supreme Court of Appeal against the corruption conviction. In December 2011 he collapsed at home in Waterkloof, Pretoria, while watching the appeal judgment on television. His appeal was denied.

Not suprised - obviously he's still have those that he rubs shoulders with in this government. He is definitely not ill and even if he is, he is not the only prisoner who is "very in" in there. There are lots of in-mates who are critically ill but the Correctional Services is keeping them in only to be reported to their families after their death. Nxa South Afrika ya tena yeses

anybody who is lawyer on this block please explain to me why do i have to foot his medical bill on top of his legal fees and all..... no no no i am basically paying medical bill for a crook who stole my money anyway, assisted criminals to bring drugs into the country and was paid in millions!!!!
