The girl, who cannot be named as she is a minor, is being kept at a place of safety until her next court appearance on August 24.

She appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Friday for the murder of her 17-year-old boyfriend. The incident happened on July 10 at GaMakanye village near Mankweng.

The two were walking together to the boy's home when they started arguing over the boy's hat. The girl then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the boy in the chest. He died instantly.

Mankweng police spokesman Constable Moses Molepo said yesterday: "We are currently busy with our investigations to ensure we get to the bottom of the matter."

The victim, Andries Kubayi, was buried at an emotionally-charged funeral in the village on Saturday.
