Matlala, 41, who died last Saturday after a long battle with diabetes, is the mother of four-year-old Makgabo Matlala, who was found murdered at her home in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg in 2006.

Though she died after an illness, Matlala's father, Ngoepe, believes she had not fully recovered from the death of her daughter.

"Sometimes crime does not affect only the victim. The consequences affect also those who remain behind," Ngoepe said.

He said his eldest daughter was a protective and loyal member of the family.

Matlala was a lawyer. After completing a B Proc degree at the University of the North, she trained as an attorney with Matlala Attorneys in Pretoria.

She then went on to work for the Road Accident Fund until her death.

Her funeral service will be held at the Lenasia Destiny Ministries International in Starling Street from 8.30am. The cortege will leave for Eldorado Park Cemetery at 10.30am.

A mother never really recovers from a child's death ... i think it ate her up alive ... and we, women, tend to live for our children ... when they pass in such a cruel manner it is very difficult to move on ... my sincere condolences to the family ... may her beautiful soul rest in peace ...
