Cop, attendant in dock for card fraud

Jul 20, 2012 | Frank Maponya Limpopo Bureau Chief | 12 comments

A LIMPOPO officer and a petrol attendant appeared in court on corruption charges.

Constable Cassius Shai, 31, who is attached to the Leboeng police station, and Shadrack Masuku appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate's Court.

The two were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged fraudulent use of the police's petrol card.

The incident is said to have happened in November last year and it has been under investigation by members of the Hawks since then.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said preliminary investigations had found that Shai had connived with Masuku to swipe the official petrol card and poured petrol into a private car. The petrol amounted to R58443, he said.

"Our intensive investigations have led to the arrest of the two. But we are disappointed that our own member was involved in the fraudulent activity," Ramatseba yesterday said.

He said the two were released on warning and that the matter was postponed to September 13 pending further investigations.

"We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that corrupt members are brought to book and dealt with harshly in accordance with the law," he said.

Ramatseba urged anyone with information about fraudulent activities to contact the anti-corruption hotline on 0800-701-701. - frankm@sowetan.co.za

Ok, this is how we do it. I give you (petrol attendant) my petrol card. When an unsuspecting cash paying client comes around purchasing a reasonable amount of petrol, you fill her up, take the cash and keep it on your person. You then swipe my petrol card as if my vehicle came through. It is advisable to calculate the kilometres because the petrol card issuer (Wesbank, etc.) can very easily pick up irregularities and anomalies. For instance, a fuel tank of 70 litres cannot at today's petrol price exceed R800 with the reserve tank taken into account. The worst fuel consumption on an ordinary police vehicle can come to 17 litres for every 100km travelled. Therefore we expect the R800 to travel a minimum of between 450 and 470 kilometres before another refill. The petrol attendant did not take my advice on those calculations. Arithmetic literacy.
