Last week the people from the Cape Flats made a big fuss over gangsterism and we were told it is not the DA’s responsibility and Zille even wrote a letter in record time pushing responsibility to the army which I have no problem with.

These people have been without toilets for a very long time and the fact that you have these movable communal toilets means there is no pressure on the provincial government to act even demonstrations will not yield much. It is a tough one but I understand the logic, they are sending a message that they don’t want these toilets for a number of reasons.

More importantly these people have been waiting for housing for a very long time, if the ground they occupy is not suitable for housing then what is the DA government doing to identify suitable housing and building houses for these people since they claim to deliver?

Ask these people if the WC is the best run province they will look back at you with blank faces, best in what exactly they will ask you.

To all those who are accusing this community of entitlement how many of you have had to use a portable toilet shared with at least a hundred other residents?

What is the occupant to toilet ratio?

I hate using the blurry things in one day events just imagine forced to using this all the time even at night when you risk being robbed or raped. This is not the level of service we should be giving to our people. It goes against the principle of treating your citizens with dignity. While destruction of property can never be justified but when the object of the attack is exactly what prevents you from getting proper ablution facilities then I understand the logic.

I think we would do well to try putting ourselves in their shoes, I too would be fed up.

They have been living under these conditions for over 10 years.

I would like to believe they would have moved elsewhere had there been more suitable location. It is one thing to tell someone to move, it is another to provide them with a place to move to.

One gets the sense these are "unwanted refugees" hence little is being done for them. Yes I am well aware that the DA only took over in 2009 but they have controlled the city much longer.

Those people have enough problems with being used as political pawns by the politicians. Let us just agree that politicians are all bloodsuckingscumbags and look at the problem instead. CapeTown has a water table problem. If the IFP, ACDP or KISS party took over, it would still be a geological issue.

To the best of my knowledge, the people were told to move to another area but they don't want to as it is further away from the industrial area (and therefore any job prospects). I am not sure about what transport was promised to them but it would be irrelevant as most of them couldn't afford transport anyhow.

If you know the procedure you would know that any land redistribution or allocation must be approved by provincial government, maybe before pointing fingers, find out where the process are.

It was not to long ago that the DA said they would have been able to move more people from unsuitable areas if the national government was not so slow in processing the requests.

Again we are back to pointing fingers at national government. Well I know the process and I know municipalities are responsible for approving the township proclamation process. Some unions have been given land on which to build houses and this is done by province.

The DA has been in power since 2009, when was the request for permission made.... lets start there and since you know so much please tell me where in the process are we exactly.

Dzel, reading your comments yes I have the right to claim it, that is why I said you must maybe find out where the process is.

Regarding pointing fingers at national government, it is so easy, they deserve it in every other place they have their corrupt, fat little fingers in.

Land will only be distributed or allocated if approved by national government, yes the municipalities must hand in the desired areas, then it will go to provincial government,, but at the end of the day it is the big cheese from the national government who must approve this. Believe me, been involved in a process like this for a community in Mpumalanga, unless this changed in the last year which I definitely doubt.

========================================

We first need to agree that the facilities they have been using are unacceptable, no human deserves to be reduced to these standards.

Then we need to agree that there is little point in one party claiming to be better than the other when there is a disconnect in terms of race and earning power.

Lastly we need to stop this tendency of wanting to claim all positives and yet pushing away all negatives.

I would gladly give credit to a party that delivers equally to all its citizens but to see black people being treated like second class citizens who are expected to share unsanitary and unsafe abolition facilities is sad. To add salt to injury the DA argues that shanty towns are the future boggles the mind.

Let Zille and her family move to a shanty town if she thinks it is acceptable to for entire communities to live under such conditions, let her share a toilet with 50 other families then she can talk.

It has flown over your head that the DA has ample time to request this land you claim they have requested and based on how long it would take it is absurd to blame national government unless you can say with a degree of certainty that yes this request was made on such and such a day.

I think that it is time that we take a pragmatic solution to this problem. No matter how many times government gives these people freebies; they are still going to end up on the streets toy toying for this thing or the other. We need to look at the root causes why these people are staying in these squatter camps (i can tell you right now, that poverty is not the main reason as some would immediately jump in response to my comments)?
We need a system that we can use to monitor the progress made by these people or families after they have been moved from a shack to an RDP house; because some of these people make their way back to these squatter camps. Government needs to embark on this root cause analysis; outlaw these establishments and systematical come up with the how and what is going to be done with the people that currently stay in such settlements.

You claim to be the master of most areas but i have yet to see you win any debate based on fact or merits. You simply spew out "facts" as you see them and as you pointed out last week you dont name your sources. When taking over an ailing business what is the first thing you do? Do you employ more staff or do you try and get the business back into full operation first? Yes they DA took over in 2009 and dont you agree that 3 years is not exactly enough time to bring the ailing province back to full health? The DA have the inept national government to contend with as well as local anc and cosatu officials hell bent on stalling progress in the province instead of working hand in hand. The anc couldnt get the country right in 18 years and you expect the DA to fix the anc mess in 3?

Your approach on this matter based on the comment above is too simplistic. My view is that an informed answer to that question would be the product of the scientific research/ study that government would need to embark on in trying to come up with the root causes (that is one of my proposed solutions). Often times we make the mistake of thinking we know something that we actually do not know. Instead of bashing one another about things we know nothing about; why don't we find out scientifically from those who are affected; so that we can come up with a systematic yet practical solutions!!!This squatter camp problem is not only exclusive to the western cape but its in each province and we need solutions and not blame apportioning.

See this is the level of thinking I have to deal with.

This is the last time I engage you WakeUp, perhaps it would be worth the effort if you ACTUALLY KNEW something but kumnyama kuwe (the main switch has tripped when it comes to you).

Your approach on this matter based on the comment above is too simplistic.
=================================================================================

What is simplistic is an assumption that states that people choose to stay emkhukhwini which is very difficult to reconcile. People are driven into such housing by poverty and a lack of housing.

What other contributors do you think are relevant cause I can't think of any...

You and WakeUp seem to be sharing a brain cell so it is no surprise you agree. Nothing like the blind leading the blind and then reassuring each other they are still on track though neither has the ability to look around and validate if this is true.

Continue reassuring each other guys.

Who would you task with this "scientific research"? The current leadership couldnt conduct a scientific experiment in a fully functionl lab.
As for repeating the mistakes of the past, the current regime is certainly making the situation worse with their jobs for pals practice.

At least we have a brain cell dude. You lack credibility on this blog as everyone knows you are inept and ill equipped to debate or even logically and factually put any kind of point across. You seemed very intelligent in the beginning but now see you lack understanding and comprehension.

Although the cause is important would it not be better to fix the problem than wait years for a study to be done and a report compiled and debated in parliament etc etc?

As for solutions. national government needs to work with provincial and vice versa to alleviate this problem. But at the moment you have national government trying to sabotage the DA , in this case, from building houses and eradicating the housing shortage just to gain votes. These are peoples lives

I think there are many; such as lack of education; lack of ambition or vision; poverty; wrong choices; greed (where u sell RDP house and revert back to a shack); having to assume parental responsibilities before time (where a school child falls pregnant or a boy impregnates a school going girl); refusing to stay under the authority of your parents (consequently having to start adult life before time; HIV aids (where children have to assume parental responsibilities due to the death of both parents); etc. Because of the multiplicity of the possible causes; we need a concerted scientific research to establish the real root cause so that we can eliminate this bug that is degrading our people!!!

Agreed; it would certainly assist with both short and long term solutions and at this time we need both, otherwise we would still be talking about squatter camps in 20 yrs from now!!!

You will do well to speak for you and only you (well perhaps for your twin as well) but stay away from terms like "everyone" since you have not conducted a survey or been given the mandate to speak for everyone.

Yet again there is no substance to his round of exchanges so there is no point in continuing on this pointless conversation. Trust me the last thing I want is to be making negative comment, I just wish you and your friend understood what a waste of time it is to debate against someone when it is clear you have no clue what you are talking about so when I ask you to raise your game it is not because I am being but rather it gets annoying after a while especially when you mix ignorance with indignation.

I think I understand you better now but these are drivers of poverty, the point I am making is shacks are an outcome of poverty. We are saying the same thing but our reasoning is at different levels but I get you.
