We may still dwell on the same pity for years that the economy is in the hands of the whites but to speak the truth what about the economy that the black goverment is holding? I am talking about the Billions of Rands that the politicians(black) are sharing among themselves and this money is there for the bettering of the poor lives by delivering the services to the people. It is for this black goverment to create the required service deliveries on all the departments and see if the unemployment scourge can not be curbed by half.

The Cubans begged SA to sign a treaty after that, but to make it look like they were not defeated (one of the conditions to the surrender). But, the famous Cuban general, on returning home was executed by Castro for his failure.

I remember years ago, some guy I think he was an MK guy shot ... it was said that it was 3 white policemen. Apparently the police cornered his comrade in a house. Then the guy came running with a rifle and we heard shots fired. Damn!! About 10 minutes later our township was full of police forces, with different armored vehicles, Casspirs, nyalas, ratels, helicopters. The house was then bombed. I have never seen so many policemen in one place so heavily armed.Report Abuse

I don't know. Maybe they suspected that there were still people (MK cadres) in the house, only to find out that the guy had already rescued his cornered comrade and they have fled the area. We were still very young and watched from a far distance as the whole area was full of police forces.

@WakeUpSouthAfricaThe battle of Quito Cuanavalle was a turning point in the war of liberation struggle in Southern Africa, in favour of liberation forces. Those thumb-sucked stats you got from "your side" are not a true reflection of what happened. Pik Botha had to wake up at midnight to negotiate a cease fire and retreat across the Quito river because the apartheid forces (mostly wet behind the ears juveniles who joined by army by force:Compulsory Military Conscription) were trapped after SWAPO, MK, MPLA and Cuban specialized units lured the boers across the bridge that was already rigged with explossives. Upon crossing the bridge in persuit of the "cowardly commies", the boers were shocked when their only way back was blown up and they were trapped and surrounded. The call was made to Pretoria and the regime had to capitulate under pressure. the war in Namibia came to an end the regime had to start releasing political prisoners belonging to Swapo, ANC, PAC, AZAPO etc. If indeed the "commies" were defeated at Quito, why then the regime negotiated a release of almost a 1000 troops trapped on the Angolan side? You will fool young people who were not there at the time, kodwa thina siphuma khona!!

The Cuban propaganda version of this "heroic battle" was widely believed in the west, and it was not until after the war had ended that the facts emerged. By the end of 1987, when the Cubans and Angolans were supposed to have achieved their great victory, they were already suing for peace in Angola, with their Soviet backers openly stating that the war there could not be won. In the negotiations that followed, one of the conditions of the Cubans was that they be allowed to make an honourable withdrawal from the war, an unusual demand to be made by a victorious army, to say the least. The fact is, the Cubans knew that they were losing but did not want to withdraw from Angola in disgrace. The South Africans, who had been the real victors in the Cuito campaign, realised that making the full facts known at that delicate stage in the peace negotiations would humiliate the Cubans and their Soviet backers and perhaps spur them into sending yet more troops to Angola in an effort to save their reputation. Making the Cubans look ridiculous would serve no useful purpose.However, once the Cuban and Soviet involvement in the war had ended and the South Africans had withdrawn their troops, it did not take long for the real story of the battle to emerge.

The SADF were whipping the FAPLA and MK were just the mercenaries that were caught in the middle of it all (some reports have them tied to vehicles). When Castro sent troupes in, they didn't actually engage much with the SADF. The mission itself was always planned to be a 'hit and run' so Castro was fully aware that SA hadn't planned (and didn't have the budget) for a long term engagement.
Other than a small contingent which was tasked with ensuring the airport was non-useable, the majority of the SADF were out of there quite quickly.

If indeed Quito did nat happen as we know it, then Frederik Willem De Klerk is still President of South Africa and Mandela is still sitting in his cell at Robben Island, Namibia is still called South West-Africa, Gatsha Buthelezi is still Chief Minister of Kwazulu, Captain Crag Kotze is still national spokesman of the South African Police Force, Captain Dirk Coetzee is still commanding officer at Vlakplaas.
