Cops shot at roadblock

Passenger in vehicle opened fire and wounded the police officers

Two police officers were shot at a roadblock at Sundumbili in KwaZulu-Natal, north of Durban, police said on Monday.

“Captain Teddy Pillay was shot in his left arm and Warrant Officer Sibongiseni Khumalo was shot in his right leg,” Lt-Col Vincent Mdunge said.

Police were manning a roadblock in Sundumbili’s Matungwini area on Sunday when they stopped a Toyota Venture and questioned the occupants.

A man sitting in the passenger seat drew a firearm and shot at the officers.

“The suspect alighted from the motor vehicle and fled the scene on foot,” Mdunge said.

The driver of the vehicle was questioned after the incident, but was not arrested. The motive for the shooting was not known.

Pillay was in a critical condition, and Khumalo was stable.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
