Hostage-taker is killed

Jul 13, 2012 | Sapa | 10 comments

A man who held his girlfriend hostage in Evaton, Gauteng, on Friday was shot and killed by police after talks for her release failed.

Police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao said this happened after three hours of negotiations.

Preliminary investigations revealed the deceased had an argument with his girlfriend and her sister at a house in Vereeniging.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, apparently drew a firearm during the argument and shot the girlfriend's sister in the foot.

"He then abducted his girlfriend and fled in a vehicle," said Adriao.

Police acted swiftly after receiving a report of an attempted murder and managed to locate the vehicle next to a house in Evaton.

"The man was still holding his girlfriend hostage when police arrived.

"He was shot and killed after he failed to co-operate with the negotiators after over three hours," Adriao said.

The woman who was rescued after being held hostage at gunpoint by her boyfriend is receiving counselling at a local hospital.

"Our detectives are waiting for the counselling process to be completed before they can get the details as to what led to the hostage incident," Capt Adriao said.

An unlicensed 9mm firearm that the boyfriend had used to shoot the woman's sister was recovered.

even though i hardly sympathise with SA ladies when it comes to matters of fidelity to partners, i hope this lady is safe as taking someone's life for infidelity is criminal. but for those SA ladies who cannot close their legs, this is what you get for toying with a man's emotions. i wait for further details.

Whatever his problem was - he acted cowardly by taking her hostage. Should have bought a bottle of whisky and picked up a "take away".

Negotiations for over three hours. This guy could have co-operated with the police if he had a licensed gun. So he thought of kidnapping charge, pointing a firearm charge and unlicensed firearm charge, unlicensed ammunition charge. He knew that his asss was going to be jailed for more than 10 years. Good riddance though.

On Friday, Sowetan and other newspapers reported that the kidnapped girl's brother was shot and they they its her sister who was shot. Don't cook the truth please.
