Addressing sex through drama

Jul 5, 2012 | Sapa | 23 comments

According to the Department of Basic Education's last survey, 49 600 students had fallen pregnant across all grades in 2008. Studies show that countries that include sex education in their school's programme have lower teenage pregnancy rates.

it boils down to good parenting and good teaching. Our society is full of se.xual predators.
both parents and teachers, coupled with the media hype around materialism and sex.

Our kids stand no chance. if you love your children you will give them the best in life

private schools and a decent house in a security golf estate.

Ja right, the real problrm is: our teachers think that sex education is a practical class and end up f.ucking the kids. Our teachers need sex education lessons first....

Damn these idi.iots again. If this department is good at Stats and Analysis they should have predicted Limpopo's crisis way back in 2008. They should have rather studied how many kids go school without books not how many people fall pregnant.

The reason they engage in sex is because the Teacher has no teaching material and the kids has no study material and so during Biology studies the Teacher demonstrate the Physiology and Anatomy of man in his office.

The most difficult thing is to encourage young people to abstain. Their response makes one feel like an old crony (maybe I am). Most frightening though is how the same young people scoff at condoms, both boys and girls. To my horror these were 14 year olds who were already sexually active.

When I was doing grade 10 in 2002 the SOS team would visit us @ school and give us life orientantion and sex education but I we still had scholars who would fall pregnant. The teachers and councellors can give sex education but the decision is up to the scholar to take it or just throw it away. I still maintain that if you still a scholar you should abstain cause condoms do break or worse part they can use other contraceptives and sleep without using condoms and contract sti/hiv

This thing starts in the family, you cant expect someone to teach your kids if a parent doesn't do his part. All parents should talk to their children and they must tell their children if someone is touching them in an uncomfortable way...... PARENTS PLEASE WAKE UP AND TEACH YOUR CHILDREN

Hail

This problem come a long way. Typical example how many people are living in shacks? or poor family with a small house? how many vat and sit are there? then how do the young adult or parents do sex? wait for the kids to sleep, most of the time they are not sleeping and they saw the whole thing or maybe hear and that is the course of teenage pregnacy because they practice what they saw or heard. My friend is working @ early learning centre @ the township and during play time or nap time they (kids) do what they saw at home. If asked is nothing wrong mom and dad do that all the time. The solution, it is start with good parenting, by giving their kids the best all the time. You cannot keep making babies in the shack because you are a good example or the role model of your children they will copy you. if you sleep around they will do that because they saw no wrong doing since you are doing it. How do you tell them about abstaining while you not practicing it? how do you tell them about aids while you busy sleeping around/ they will not take your words seriously. Action not words.

@ Tango it is Limpopo and do you know why? evrything in that Province is slow not because of the people there but our government has failed it and it is treated as if it doesn't belong here in South Africa. There is shortage of everything from food in hopsitals to scholars getting textbooks in the mid of the year where else they should be busy with last chapters or preparing for year end exams. So do you think they can have access to life orientantion education?

Taking your children to private schools does not mean you love them, it is because you afford to, we have good parents who love their children and cos they don't afford private schools they send them to public schools. You must remember education is not a substitute of intelligent, you can be educated and still remain dom, education is just something that opens up your mind, and if intelligent you become more intelligent. Please read what thathakonke

Spot on girl, clapping(applauding)hands for you dear. We have many useless donkeys from this private schools thing cos they always think they are cleverer

We need to look at what has changed in the country since 1994.
Girls getting pregnant while still at school is not new, but the ridiculous numbers are!!

Lower expectation (grades) 30% pass mark has become normal and children having children to get a grant has become accepted!

There is no embarresment or consequences. The babies are used to access 'pocket money' while the Gogo gets the baby or it is dumped in the garbage/pit latrine or whatever.

We need quality education that demands that our students get the very best mark not the lowest, and that there is NO grant (reward) for having children while at school.

I would rather see a grant (of a lesser amount) being paid to the students who DON'T GET PREGNANT than to those who do.

When you expect nothing you'll get nothing, but when you expect the best most kids/people will try harder to get there if they know they'll get the recognition for it..
