There is absolutely nothing wrong with this tradition. It's just that these operators don't know what they are doing. I think they should all go and see how the Ndebeles do it. We don't go there every year. We go there every fourth year and this gives these boys enough time to grow and focus on their studies at schools. This is really horrifying indeed. A qualified initiation school doctor will NEVER allow Initiates to be bitten in the first place.

In as much as initiation has been practiced by some Black cultures for ages, I think perhaps there are no strict controls by the authorities. Nowadays, everyone wants to run these schools. Surely, someone must put a stop to this abuse otherwise this culture, right as it is for others, will be perceived to be of no use.
Our society is also to blame. Children feel that they will be regarded as men only when they have been to initiation. They escape to go to these schools. Shouldnt communities be educated by the dangers posed by some of these schools?

what was Mthandazo going to do there as he was circumsized already??? he was only calling for a beating from those who were to do it the traditional way, even coming back from the mountain infront of other guys he was still not a man. For heaven's sake, this guys were refused to go to the school for about 3 times but they went without parent's consent. Also look at the age of the principal and teachers (between 27 and 35), this guys are still inexperienced. The schools should be run by experienced teachers (over 50) with guys 30 years up being understudies to gain experience and only be allowed to run their own schools once they reach 50 as well. People who have not been to the mountain will never see a reason for one to go. Culture is what makes you what you are, you may be black but culture makes you belong and identifies you, you lose culture you lose your identity. I say let us come up with solutions instead of saying let everybody turn white so that they can be perfect. My solution is that, if traditional leaders are held responsible for mistreatment and malpractice then all this will go back to the way it was 20 years ago. Clinics all around the country are currently doing circumcision for all boys and men and this is free. There is follow up visits until the wound heals and medication and instructions on how to deal with the issue.

Why people go to mountains for just a simple circumcision n pay thousands of rands, i mean at hospital/private doctor you pay less amount and get to heal within 5 days at home watching your favorite tv show eating nice well cooked food.

This abuse of tradition normally happens in the rural areas. In most cases, people there are staunch traditionalists. Even when there is a hospital nearby, they will not go there because they believe that initiation is properly done in the mountains. It is all good and well for others to say what you said above. But the reality is that ppl have belief systems and it is very difficult to change that.
Some people argue why we Blacks do so many rituals at our functions; especially funerals. We do that because traditionally this has been done, and it is very difficult to change even if some ppl might see that as unnecessary.

Culture is what makes you what you are, you may be black but culture makes you belong and identifies you, you lose culture you lose your identity. I say let us come up with solutions instead of saying let everybody turn white so that they can be perfect. My solution is that, if traditional leaders are held responsible for mistreatment and malpractice then all this will go back to the way it was 20 years ago. Because they will make sure that the whole initiation process is conducted properly and improved. Amen.

My condolences to the families!
I know of initiaiton schools where all initatites come back safe and sound after their training. So I think it is wrong to paint them all with one brush.
These types of schools described here are run by criminals hence why they are not registered. Everything about htem is criminal and should be treated as such. They simply do not have credentials to run such schools. This is a scam people. Simply closing initiation schools will not help the situation.These criminal elements will simply invent onother type of scheme-scam and lure unsuspecting invidiuals. They need to be rooted out. Lock them up and throw away the key!

Wow guys you are looking down and criticizing most of the things that your elders practiced and culturized. Nobody complained much then until white people came along and gave you mirrors to see a better reflection of yourselves. My problem is why all of a sudden people are pushing that every black person should practise white culture? Once that is achieved then people will be pushing for everybody to make an effort to have white children because a black child will be seen as a curse. You must understand one thing, culture is like religion, as long as you believe there is nothing wrong with it, nobody will convince you otherwise. Just like a white person religion whereby they believe one should have sex with his mother at the age of 21 to graduate into manhood. Eventually religion and culture become one, white people were made to believe that black people are animals and killing one does not make you a sinner in God's eyes but a hero who killed a Devil's child. These type of topics are really boring and annoying.We had these problems many ago as long as I can remember,but today we still have people doing it.How many times do we have to teach people about these initiation schools, that they are dangerous and that they put the lives of these children at risk.
I can't imagine up until now we still find people practising unprotected sex...the belief that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting HIV is misleading.

Basically both of you are saying I am way behind, I am not that suprised that you should think like that. But one thing both of you are saying is that moving with the times is addopting the white culture, that is taking our sons to hospitals and doctors. I have been to the mountain, there is a lot of right things things there but there is some flops there and there caused by people who always lookout for an opportunity to push own Agendas just like everywhere money and abuse of "some power" is involved. All I will say is that people who have been to the mountain can have a better say in this matter cause they know exactly what is going on, not all of them though because some have been there but have failed to pass. In short is called passing through the passage of manhood. I am educated, well educated, have a Computer Science degree and a couple of MS certificates. Initiation school there are no drop outs or government funding like NESFAS or Thuthuka. A parent should secure the life of his child by cooperating with a principal in charge. If you want your child to drop out from the school you imply death. That principal is too strong and well informed. In the school the initiates are incised and “muti” is pressed in their blood for many security reasons. You would not expect a child to go in there today and come tomorrow unless if you want to harm your normality of your child or mean his death. As much as I am a cultural person myself. I always wonder why these people are so selective when they practice their culture. I have no qualms about the relevance of any cultural practice as long as we practise it responsible without the unnecessary loss of life, which is unfortunate. If some of our people go to the mountains for the rite of passage to be men, by all means, as long as that is not imposed on me.
Let us try to find out lasting solutions to continue with the practice but it must not be a death trap to some of our boys nor be used as a cash cow by some ingcibis. I was exposed to the good and bad of this practice, during my stay in the Republic of Cape Town.
We need to agree at what age must the boys be and root out all schools that are a health hazard and ensure that this is done by a qualified ingcibi. Report Abuse

Why as a parent do you run an illegal school, why are you beating the initiates, why allow your kids to go to an illegal school, how come you don`t stay with you kid for the 1st week up there.This tradition is so exposed by our media, in my time, we would "moer" the media if they set foot in the schools.The principal is suppose to be an experienced person who has done the job for years & that person is appointed by the parents. My son will go there when the time comes not as a 17 year old.

As much as I am a cultural person myself. I always wonder why these people are so selective when they practice their culture. Some people don't have a problem with having a white wedding without going through the culrural processes. yet they will go and defend this one specific backward practice even when lives are lost and these so called 'men' are out of control after coming from the mountain!

I get angry at people who comment on a topic which they have no clue about. I’m a Xhosa and I have gone through the process. Firstly, I don’t know why the women are commenting on the topic. I’m not trying to be chauvinistic, as far as I know, this a topic discussed by men (initiated men). We need to ask ourselves, why are these deaths taking place, what is the cause of it? There are people whose main aim is to making money at any cause. When I read this article, I came to the conclusion that government and the traditional leaders have put mergers in place, by asking schools to register. These schools will only qualify if the meet the standards. Some of you are of the view that we should stop the tradition… Wow! How quickly we black people forget…. Remember that these we some of the things that were deemed as taboe by the oppressor and we forth for it. If you don’t know your culture, you are a lost soul because you don’t know where you are coming from. So if you don’t follow the traditions and norms, don’t comment… If you didn’t go to Initiation School, you’re a boy, don’t comment, if you are a woman, don’t comment because you don’t know what you are talking about.
You can b right and wrong I dont know, but remember women are ** Inzala bantu ** and yes they do have a say in this western culture we are leaving in, jaaaaa ekhaya iindaba zasebandla azikhulunywa ngabo mma lapho jys reg, but not all of us as women we know that bcos some ngamashuburu, so we also respect them hence they have given birth to those boyz who r dying in those illegal schools. We don't go there every year. We go there every fourth year and this gives these boys enough time to grow and focus on their studies at schools. For heaven's sake, this guys were refused to go to the school for about 3 times but they went without parent's consent. Also look at the age of the principal and teachers (between 27 and 35), this guys are still inexperienced. Culture is what makes you what you are, you may be black but culture makes you belong and identifies you, you lose culture you lose your identity. I say let us come up with solutions instead of saying let everybody turn white so that they can be perfect. My solution is that, if traditional leaders are held responsible for mistreatment and malpractice then all this will go back to the way it was 20 years ago. Clinics all around the country are currently doing circumcision for all boys and men and this is free. There is follow up visits until the wound heals and medication and instructions on how to deal with the issue.Why then are these people going into the mountains to die when the result is the same?

This abuse of tradition normally happens in the rural areas. In most cases, people there are staunch traditionalists. Even when there is a hospital nearby, they will not go there because they believe that initiation is properly done in the mountains. It is all good and well for others to say what you said above. But the reality is that ppl have belief systems and it is very difficult to change that.
Some people argue why we Blacks do so many rituals at our functions; especially funerals. We do that because traditionally this has been done, and it is very difficult to change even if some ppl might see that as unnecessary.

i also want to differ with you, it has always been done in the mountains, the reason being to help guys to heal without any disturbance, it did not come with Xhosas, its just that our media has been giving xhosa initiation schools much attention due to casualities happening there (in the Eastern Cape), else looooooong time ago before even Jan Van Riebek came to our shores, black people (Sothos, Tswanas, Xhosas, etc) have always been going to the mountain to do be initiated.
the only thing i agree with you on is that Zulus dont circumsize as it is not part of their culture, but now due to health issues they go to hospitals, which i think should be adopted by everyone cos initiation schools seem to be failing as they are being run by inexperienced people or if we continue with them then they should strickly be run by Chiefs and experienced old guys in the communities like it was done ages ago

My condolences to the families!I know of initiaiton schools where all initatites come back safe and sound after their training. So I think it is wrong to paint them all with one brush.
These types of schools described here are run by criminals hence why they are not registered. Everything about htem is criminal and should be treated as such. They simply do not have credentials to run such schools. This is a scam people. Simply closing initiation schools will not help the situation.These criminal elements will simply invent onother type of scheme-scam and lure unsuspecting invidiuals. They need to be rooted out. Lock them up and throw away the key!

These type of topics are really boring and annoying.We had these problems many ago as long as I can remember,but today we still have people doing it.How many times do we have to teach people about these initiation schools, that they are dangerous and that they put the lives of these children at risk.I can't imagine up until now we still find people practising unprotected sex...the belief that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting HIV is misleading.
Even if you are circumcised you still need to practise safe sex.

That is why I fear so much about local cultures being twisted the way that they are. I know guys you learn the facts from me.Initiation school there are no drop outs or government funding like NESFAS or Thuthuka. A parent should secure the life of his child by cooperating with a principal in charge. If you want your child to drop out from the school you imply death. That principal is too strong and well informed. In the school the initiates are incised and “muti” is pressed in their blood for many security reasons. You would not expect a child to go in there today and come tomorrow unless if you want to harm your normality of your child or mean his death. Parents should cooperate if his child decided to run there. Now they want answers of their death.

What is next now? Are they going to be conducted in a university of technology, college or university?

Morning AllI have no qualms about the relevance of any cultural practice as long as we practise it responsible without the unnecessary loss of life, which is unfortunate. If some of our people go to the mountains for the rite of passage to be men, by all means, as long as that is not imposed on me.
Let us try to find out lasting solutions to continue with the practice but it must not be a death trap to some of our boys nor be used as a cash cow by some ingcibis. I was exposed to the good and bad of this practice, during my stay in the Republic of Cape Town.
We need to agree at what age must the boys be and root out all schools that are a health hazard and ensure that this is done by a qualified ingcibi.

I don`t like commenting on this issue, especially with women let alone those who don`t do it. Mgeez mentioned that the problem is not with the culture/tradition. The problem is us, parents. Why as a parent do you run an illegal school, why are you beating the initiates, why allow your kids to go to an illegal school, how come you don`t stay with you kid for the 1st week up there.This tradition is so exposed by our media, in my time, we would "moer" the media if they set foot in the schools.The principal is suppose to be an experienced person who has done the job for years & that person is appointed by the parents. My son will go there when the time comes not as a 17 year old.To the Xhosa guys, you know, you are not a man until you have been to the mountain, if not you are nothing but a boy in the community.

As much as I am a cultural person myself. I always wonder why these people are so selective when they practice their culture. I get angry at people who comment on a topic which they have no clue about. I’m a Xhosa and I have gone through the process. Firstly, I don’t know why the women are commenting on the topic. I’m not trying to be chauvinistic, as far as I know, this a topic discussed by men (initiated men). We need to ask ourselves, why are these deaths taking place, what is the cause of it? There are people whose main aim is to making money at any cause. When I read this article, I came to the conclusion that government and the traditional leaders have put mergers in place, by asking schools to register. These schools will only qualify if the meet the standards. Some of you are of the view that we should stop the tradition… Wow! How quickly we black people forget…. Remember that these we some of the things that were deemed as taboe by the oppressor and we forth for it. If you don’t know your culture, you are a lost soul because you don’t know where you are coming from. So if you don’t follow the traditions and norms, don’t comment… If you didn’t go to Initiation School, you’re a boy, don’t comment, if you are a woman, don’t comment because you don’t know what you are talking about.
