A man has appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court for allegedly lying to police about a hijacking, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the 53-year-old “family” man, who he declined to name, claimed his company car was stolen on June 12 while he was helping a woman who had jumped in front of the car in Delft.

He opened a case of hijacking and claimed two men stole the car and his personal belongings.

Van Wyk said it emerged the man had actually picked up a sex worker along the road, and stopped behind bushes near a petrol station, close to Brentwood Park, around 3am.

“He was caught with his pants down when two unidentified males approached him and robbed him of his personal belongings, and took the company’s car with them.” 

The car was eventually stopped by work colleagues and the men and sex worker fled.

The man appeared in court on Tuesday facing a perjury charge and was released on bail. He would appear again on August 30.
