Agric department gets new D-G
Sipho Ntombela has been appointed as the Acting Director-General for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Ntombela's appointment comes hot on the heels of the suspension of former director-general Langa Zita, the department announced yesterday. The department said Zita's suspension was an "administrative matter".
Spokeswoman for the department Palesa Mokemele refused to elaborate on what was meant by "administrative matter" behind Zita's suspension, but said Ntombela was appointed in his place because he was a senior member of the department.
Farmer union AgriSA welcomed Zita's suspension. "Cadre deployment not only holds unacceptable risks for service delivery at all government levels, but is also unfair to individuals such as Mr Zita, who should not have been appointed in the post and who has now been suspended," AgriSA spokesman Johannes Möller said.
Möller said AgriSA's dissatisfaction with service delivery had been brought to a head by Zita's statements over the past year, which had "served as evidence of his ignorance and sluggish way of addressing problems of commercial agriculture".
The DA also welcomed Zita's suspension. "Mr Zita has done little to put this struggling department back on a solid footing, and the DA has in the past called for him to be removed from his post."
