Maligana is a musician with a difference
South Africa has produced artists from all kinds of professions, but an agricultural scientist indulging in gospel music must be something new.
South Africa has produced artists from all kinds of professions, but an agricultural scientist indulging in gospel music must be something new.
That is exactly what Godfrey Takalani Maligana does.
He advises the Gauteng provincial government on animal breeding during the day, and come weekends, the Limpopo-born artist is a gospel musician.
He has just released his debut album, Nwananga (Venda for My Child).
An accomplished agriculturalist with a chain of degrees, the last thing you would expect him to be doing is singing gospel.
The man has, among other qualifications, a national diploma in agriculture (majoring in animal production) and a bachelor of technology degree - both from Unisa.
He also has a masters degree in agriculture management from the University of Free State, and a diploma in project management from the University of Pretoria.
"I might be educated ... but I grew up in church, singing. And for me gospel music nourishes my soul. I do music for my spiritual needs and that of other people".
"For a long time now I have been looking for a recording company to release my CD, but none of them were interested, then I decided to release it myself. And when I perform at malls and other places, I actually sell a good quantity," he says.
Maligana is also a songwriter, composer and producer. Born and raised in a musical family, he has been actively singing since the age of nine.
He developed his singing career through participating in various community and church choirs like The Weapons of Christ, Sweet Melody and The Angels of God (all from his home village Tshino at Ha-Nesengani in Vuwani, Venda).
He says Nwananga was inspired by the need to educate the youth of today and to mould them into good leaders for tomorrow.
