HEARINGS to discuss the possible revision of public holidays was under way in Durban yesterday, with more than 100 people taking part in the discussions.
Four complaints sparked the discussion about the revision of public holidays, the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities said.
"Two complaints were received from Durban, one from Free State and one from North West," commission advocate Aubrey Sedupane said.
"The complaints allege unfair discrimination, a lack of recognition (accorded) other religions, and the basic condition of employment (act) that forces people who don't fall under the Christian religion to take leave."
Youth Hindu Network members, from Newlands in Durban, wore T-shirts that said "Make Diwali a public holiday".
Public hearings have been held in Gauteng and Free State.
