'ANC adopting DA policies'
A LEADING teachers' union accused the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday of adopting DA policies.
"The call by KwaZulu-Natal secretary Sihle Zikalala to make education an essential service is yet another point that puts the provincial ruling party as the mouthpiece of the DA," South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) provincial secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi said.
On Monday, Zikalala told reporters in Durban that the ANC would propose that education be declared an essential service at the national conference to be held later this month in Gauteng.
People working in essential services are not allowed to strike.
Mathonsi said Zikalala had not provided a logical explanation for the proposal.
"The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal takes the Cosatu unions as an irritant (rather) than as an important partner in the national democratic revolution," Mathonsi said.
"They are demonstrating the leadership that is intolerant of trade unions who believe that by banning public sector unions then they would have found a panacea for education challenges."
He said if the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal continued its anti-worker and anti-union talk, Sadtu would withdraw its participation from all quality learning and teaching campaign initiatives.
"We can just easily instruct our members to work to the rule of seven to eight hours. You can take this as a promise, education will be a real disaster," Mathonsi said.
He also condemned the ANC for supporting the youth wage subsidy, and said the party knew that the issue was still subject to debate by Cosatu and the ANC at a national level. The DA supports the youth wage subsidy.

Ha, 7 to 8 hours my foot. Most of your members don't even average that now.SADTU is the worst enemy of education in SA and are largely to blame for the fact that we have failed an entire generation by providing the poorest quality of education imaginable. teacher who does not see him/herself as a proffessional, but as a worker, is in the wrong profession.

With rights come responsibilities. They have the right to strike but they also have the responsibility to teach. If they didn't flout their responsibilities by holding our children to ransom EVERY BLOODY YEAR then this would never have come up.If the teachers went on strike because the classrooms were falling down or the books had not arrived - great. I'd be there handing out coffee and doughnuts. Striking for 2% more on their salary and then acting like juvenile delinquents while they trash the streets and threaten their own pupils, is just pathetic.

Agree with MommaC.The ANC was a liberation party. Its time they go off into the sunset and leave SA for a new and better party to run.
And for unions, also time to die out, they are a big part of the reason SA i in such a state. Union bosses are bigots and htpocrites, living large but preach commie rubbish

Apartheid is to blame for the previous "lost generation" of learners - "No Education before Liberation"SADTU is to blame for the lost generation there after.......and for many many more generations to come, unless we get a LEADER to stop them in their tracks. In the 18 years since the end of apartheid, instead of closing the gap between the education of black children and white children, the gap exploded even wider. While SADTU teachers are striking non-stop, former model C schools operates more efficiently than ever before, with honest unselfish teachers who regards their profession as a calling.

I knew it will come to this point. The ANC PEC made a blunder, & this resolution was not part of the Conference they just wake up & decide to pronounce what they like.Unions will fight to the end, anyone knows that for Zuma to emerge in Mangaung he need the Unions. By attacking the Unions, the Zuma Brigade (supporters) is shooting itself on the foot

IF only the DA can be compensated with as much money as the anc leaders for all the behind the scenes hard work in formulating their policies which anc as is said end up adopting, but no the anc crooks want to steal DA's shine, because they lack vision, the only ambition left within the anc is looting SAn coffers to bankruptcy, I have never imagine in my wildest dreams that we would end up with such a morally/mentally/intellectually compromised regime,Now anc go k!ss Helen Zille's ass, the woman is in top of her game, you are just jealous that's why you have not acknowledged her efforts, alas she is not perfect but she makes anc leaders look the most incompetent useless pieces of nothing, in short she wipes the floor with the lot of you, you are not leaders you are followers and corrupt ones to that effect.
