Victims tell of attacks by 'taxi rapist'

So far, 14 women have laid charges of rape against him

THE case against an alleged serial rapist has been postponed by the Johannesburg High Court to July 30 for cross-examination.

Victor Vuledzani Ramulifho, of Roodepoort in Gauteng, faces 49 charges, including nine of rape and 15 of kidnapping. He has also been charged with armed robbery.

His alleged modus operandi was to pretend to be a taxi driver and after collecting his victims at various points, he would then rape and rob them.

So far, 14 women have laid charges of rape against Ramulifho. He also faces a charge of escaping from prison, following his initial arrest in 2010.

The State insisted the 26-year-old accused was guilty of all charges levelled against him and wanted the court to sentence him to life in prison.

It is alleged that on September 14 2010, one of his victims was waiting for a taxi at Westgate Shopping Mall, to go to Krugersdorp, when Ramulifho, who was driving a white minibus taxi, stopped for her, pretending to be a local taxi driver on a related route.

The court heard that the "taxi" travelled for a while before stopping at Princess Street robots, where Ramulifho allegedly sprayed the woman with a pepper spray in the eyes.

He then instructed her to lie down. Later, when he tried to rape her, the woman told him she was HIV-positive in an attempt to scare him off. This plan worked, but Ramulifho allegedly robbed her of her cellphone.

He then dropped the woman at an unknown place and sped off.

On October 26 2010 another woman - who was also waiting for a taxi on Ontdekkers Road next to the Westgate Mall bus stop - became a victim when Ramulifho showed up in his minibus "taxi".

The woman testified that Ramulifho robbed her of her bag which had R400.

She said Ramulifho drove around with her and threatened her and demanded her bank card and the pin code and allegedly withdrew about R3,000 from her bank account.

He then allegedly undressed the woman, inserted his fingers inside her private parts and raped her.

He later dropped his victim near a filling station in Luipaard Street - also not far from the Westgate Mall.

All the victims gave the same story, and said they were sure Ramulifho was the man who had attacked them.

Ramulifho is expected to testify on July 30.
