Weekend speedsters arrested
DANGEROUS: Social worker nabbed at 224km and drunken driver caught doing 250/km
A total of 37 Gauteng motorists have been arrested over the weekend for speeding, Gauteng traffic police said on Sunday.
Spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalu said eight people were arrested on Sunday morning on the R21.
She said a 42-year-old social worker driving a white Lexus was caught travelling at an average speed of 224km/h in 120km/h zone.
“The social worker from the Ekurhuleni municipality claimed he was rushing to the office to collect certain document from his employer.”
Nxumalu said the eight arrested face charges relating to reckless driving, speeding and drunken driving.
They will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Meanwhile Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said patrolling Johannesburg metro police nabbed a total of 29 speeding motorists on the N1 from Friday midnight to Saturday midnight.
“A 26-year-old man was caught on Friday doing 250/km per hour with his black Audi. He face charges of speeding and drunken driving.”
Minnaar said the 29 arrested will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
He warned that motorists who travel at high speed on the freeways will be caught.
