MEC gives uniforms
ABOUT 100 pupils from Dumisane Primary School in Moolman farming area, about 40km from Piet Retief in Mpumalanga, will go to school warm this winter thanks to the department of public works, roads and transport.
Accompanied by Mkhondo local municipality executive mayor Bhekabantu Mtshali and officials from the department of education, MEC Dikeledi Mahlangu donated a full set of uniforms to each pupil, consisting a shirt, trouser or skirt, socks and shoes.
"We cannot shy away from such situations in which our children go to school without proper uniforms," Mahlangu said.
"We need to work together to ensure that the future of our children is secured.
"I would like to call on all of us to work together and ensure that we do something to guarantee that our children go to school with a full stomach and dressed properly ..." Mahlangu said.
Sibongile Thibedi, a parent whose children were among the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude.
"I really appreciate what the MEC did for us because I did not have the money to buy school uniforms. "My kids will from today on look beautiful when they go to school. I even borrowed a camera because I wanted to make sure that this day remains memorable for me and my kids," Thibedi said.
The donation was made possible by the management of the department, which contributed from their own pockets an amount of R37000 that was used to purchase the school uniforms.
A further donation of R8000 was in order to fix broken windows and buy paint and cement to renovate the school. - mashabas@sowetan.co.za
