A father who was arrested after he allegedly killed his two children in Muizenberg has died in hospital, Western Cape police said on Friday.

The 47-year-old man died late on Thursday night, Warrant Officer November Filander said.

The man was under police guard at a local hospital after he tried to kill himself.

On Wednesday, he is believed to have slit the throats of his two-year-old son and three-year-old stepdaughter after he fetched them from their creche in the Village Heights informal settlement.

Residents called the police.

The motive for the crime was not known.
