Improved security on Cape trains

Jun 14, 2012 | Sapa | 1 comments

Western Cape train security has been beefed up with 100 extra guards on duty from this month, Metrorail says

Spokeswoman Riana Scott said the new security contingent was in addition to 100 Metrorail protection services officials who recently took up posts.

The boosted security formed part of a plan to address key commuter concerns.

Metrorail CEO Mosenngwa Mofi said an action plan launched this week would improve operational efficiency and reliability.

“The ageing infrastructure, resulting from underinvestment over the last 30 years, alongside theft and vandalism of safety critical assets, are the key drivers of delays and cancellations,” he said.

The province had budgeted R263 million for changes.

A total of R130m had been budgeted for infrastructure replacement and rehabilitation.

Philippi, Langa, Heideveld and Athlone stations would be upgraded at a cost of R124m.

About R9m would be spent on fencing critical areas around railways.
