RESIDENTS living along Port Elizabeth's salt pans are afraid to fall asleep at night because when they do rats “as big as cats” infest their homes and bite them.
“The rats have taken over. They come into our homes and roam around in the streets as if they own the place. “If you see one, you must give way. Throwing stones or hitting them with brooms does not help. They just look you in the eye and go about their business,”

@Lubhujwaa 'gay cat' *laughing* all that is needed is a timeous garbage collection, as you know in most townships municipalities do not collect garbage as they should so this type of vermin has a plenty to feed from, you will not see such things in the surburbs cause garbage is collected and when not collected its kept properly inside garbage tin not left lying around on the floor for the vermin to feed from, its self inflicted this plague actually by the ppl who refuse to throw waste in the bins provided. @BaleliM its not only about cleaning one's surroundings its about entire garbage in the area being managed properly that is the duty of municipality, and when there is plague emanating from uncollected trash (as is often the case in most townships in the country) then the municipality should get pest control, also the leaking sewage in most townships attracts this kind of vermin, so its too simplistic to just blame residents over this, bottom line if this problem is not managed ppl will be infected with diseases children are most vulnerable Report Abuse

The Municipality has a legal obligation and responsibility to get rid of vermin, not only for health & safety reasons, but for its own reputation. Who would want to visit an area infested with rats? All animals are more scared of us than we are of them. Its beyond belief that the officials are not doing anything about this problem. Perhaps JZ should look into this problem, I suggest the govt should employ local people to systematically destroy the rats, not only in PE but all of Mzansi as well Report Abuse

@Papage - For now, while waiting for the Government to assist you, here is a tip: Buy lots of Hot Chilies and when you pour it all around your house at night,=======================================================================
We do all kinds of things to keep the pests away hey? Hihihihihi. O batla pherefere e ftlhe magotlo? Anyway, I heard that pepper also works very well to keep them away. A friend of mine has planted some sharp smelling plant in his yard, it is said to keep snakes away too. I don't know its name. He says that he hasn't seen the rats in his yard ever since he planted it.

ShredderA couple of years ago we had some in our roof. Nearly drove me crazy!
Ratttex just made them strong enough to play soccer up there and we have a flat roof so I couldn't even throw the neighbour's cat up to get them. Eventually, I resorted to the old borax chocolate trick but the downside to that is trying to get the de@d bod1es out of the ceiling afterwards.

@Lubhujwaa 'gay cat' *laughing* all that is needed is a timeous garbage collection, as you know in most townships municipalities do not collect garbage as they should so this type of vermin has a plenty to feed from, you will not see such things in the surburbs cause garbage is collected and when not collected its kept properly inside garbage tin not left lying around on the floor for the vermin to feed from, its self inflicted this plague actually by the ppl who refuse to throw waste in the bins provided.Report Abuse

@BaleliM its not only about cleaning one's surroundings its about entire garbage in the area being managed properly that is the duty of municipality, and when there is plague emanating from uncollected trash (as is often the case in most townships in the country) then the municipality should get pest control, also the leaking sewage in most townships attracts this kind of vermin, so its too simplistic to just blame residents over this, bottom line if this problem is not managed ppl will be infected with diseases children are most vulnerableReport Abuse

this is serious guys it's not even funny anymore, I'm so freakn scared of rats. these rats r really taking over in Tembisa. one wknd, I visited my gran in Tembisa she wake up as usual to clean the yard we heard her battling with the broom outside and we went to check the was these big "Roto" injured in the leg my gran was hitting it with the broom stick and guess what? it was fighting back trying to jump on her with the very strange sound coming from the mouth as if it was screaming or something and some cats are even scared of these rats..... na I think the solution to this is to clean up and we as the community should meet government hallfway and do it ourselves coz we r the people living in this condition of fearing rats in our own space.......!Report Abuse

The Municipality has a legal obligation and responsibility to get rid of vermin, not only for health & safety reasons, but for its own reputation. Who would want to visit an area infested with rats? All animals are more scared of us than we are of them. Its beyond belief that the officials are not doing anything about this problem. Perhaps JZ should look into this problem, I suggest the govt should employ local people to systematically destroy the rats, not only in PE but all of Mzansi as wellReport Abuse
