Conjoined twins born in the Eastern Cape last week have died, according to a report on Tuesday.
Western Cape health spokeswoman Faiza Steyn said the twin girls died on Sunday night after being transported earlier in the week to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, the Cape Times reported.
The girls were born at the Dr Malizo Mpehle Memorial Hospital hospital in Tsolo last Wednesday, with a combined weight of four kilograms.
They were flown to the Western Cape on Thursday to be examined by doctors with better expertise.
Steyn said the girls had shared a heart and liver. She said the heart was very weak and this was made worse by a twin’s breathing problems. “Because they shared these essential organs the chance of them surviving was very minimal.”

when I first read about this story I knew that these babies will not make it, especially being born in the EC gov hospitals is the worse thing that can happen to any child, these hospitals are badly equipped skills wise and other necessary medical equipment, so I can't say I am shocked that the twins passed on, I am shocked that no one could see this coming and transfer these kids to better equipped hospitals in the country to give them a fair chance in life.Report Abuse

Hayi guys don't make this a ku.ku issue when its an issue of lack of resources to enable the twins a better possibility to survive everyone knows that EC gov hospitals are a death traps, so if ku.ku predicted that the twins wld not survive she was right, there are no expertise, no resources, nothing in the EC hospitals, I wldn't go to these hospitals if my life depended on that, cause I know that chances are I wld die for sure, a midwife in the rural EC has a better chance of delivering a healthy baby that the EC gov hospitals.Report Abuse
