Probe on abuse of immigrants

By Sapa | Jun 08, 2012 | COMMENTS [ 29 ]

THE Department of Home Affairs has to come up with urgent and meaningful measures that will end the ill-treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in the country, the SA Human Rights Commission said

The SAHRC has launched another investigation into reports of an alleged protest which was staged by refugees at the Lindela Repatriation Centre on Monday.

It was reported that the refugees were protesting against an unlawful practice by the department, which had allowed them to be held captive for longer periods.

However, the department had denied the allegations that there was a riot.

According to the Immigration Act, the department cannot detain refugees for more than 120 days.

SAHRC spokesman Vincent Moaga said the commission had decided to launch an investigation following a visit by their monitoring team to the centre on Tuesday.

Moaga confirmed that the commission was also investigating an earlier complaint relating to alleged appalling conditions and treatment of refugees and asylum seekers at the facility from a consortium of eight NGOs, who worked closely with refugees and asylum seekers.

He added these violations were of concern as it appeared to be becoming endemic and systemic.

They can go to hell.We have got enough of these so called ''Assylum seekers'' already.

@SAHRC & PASSOP

I have never heard SAHRC or Passop complaining or taking government to task when South Africa rights are being trampled upon every fuccken day. There are many South Africans who live below the bread line,they live in polling conditions, for example in places like Jeppe,Denver,primrose and so on, South africans live in corrugated sheets next to railways lines.

Yet when foreigners conditions come into light , these local groups as SAHRC,Passop and others bark till they spit vermin with government. From now, SOUTH AFRICANS MUST COME FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Sabza007

I agree..SOUTH AFRICANS MUST COME FIRST...they/we have already suffered enough under apartheid.
When will the time for South Africans be,because right now ,in S.A.,its time for all and sundry.
That does not mean that we hate or dislike our fellow Africans but we need controls like when we go to some of their countries,its also,their citizens first,from business to other benefits,and there is nothing wrong there. Our politicians dont know this because they have separate diplomatic treatment when they go there.

@Warren,

As name calling and spewing hatred is all you know, it's not worth even making any logical dicussion with you. You know where i'm at so you're welcome at anytime with your boys when you want to come and implement your ideas. It's obvious all you do is hide behind the internet all day spewing all manner of things out but don't have the balls to come out and put it into practice. I wish you well but wouldn't waste anytime discussing any of your baseless Xenophobic ideas.

@sabza007 agree with you 100%

@somaartakeit
I can sense a lot of arogance in your comment. Who gave the asylum seekers right to be in South Africa ? They 've got no right as yet hence asylum seeking. It has never happened in any other country that asylum seekers are protesting, even in the so called first world countries. I have been a foreigner in the so called first world countries for years , South Africa is too lenient with foreigners, they benefit more than the Suoth Africans.
@Naija4life why dont you go back to your native Nigeria. You people are so selfish that you want everything to revolve around you. The world knows that you can never trust a nigerian so sotp your stupid, unfounded comments here. You are the most narrow minded drug lords who are so selfish and evil. Why are there no foreigners in Nigeria, i never had of immigration to Nigeria, wake up idiot !!!!

@ sabza007 agree with you 100%.

@ Somaartakeit it is true foreigners are too comfortable in south africa. It is arrogant to think that people are not educated if they have adifferent view, You seem to be defending foeigners in most of your comments, why ?
@nija4life come on now tihs is not about xenophobia, nigerians are known all over the globe. It is not only in south africa the world does not want to associate with nigerians .

@seutullamakunutu

My dear seutullamakunutu, you are terribly misinformed to say that no foreigners want to go to Nigeria as you'll be surprised there are many saffers there I know of who call Nigeria their home and have becomes citizens. Yes, there are Nigerians who have committed crimes I'm not proud, but it doesn't mean I support them or that most Nigerians are like that. That, i'm sorry to say is very stereotypically and not something I would expect from an educated saffer. Nigeria, you'll be surprised to know has the same issues as over here but it would be silly of me to start pointing the fingers at foreigners, who also commits crimes to blame all the problems of the society on them. Also just because you were born in south africa doesn't make you more south african than people like myself who is also now a citizen.

@nija4life.

Point of correction, i have not been informed about Nigeria, i have been several times and wil still go in future. I am more south african than you !!! I won't stoop to that level you want me to, but being an educated saffer does not mean i have to agree with you especially when it comes to nigeria, never .

You'll be suprised to know that most foreigners like myself are even more law abiding and generate work and income for the economy than the so called local saffers who claim we're the cause of the problems in the society. Firstly, we are more willing to work and don't sit around drinking and pointing the blames at others. Secondly, we came here with better education and have a mindset to do better in life, and lastly are more focused in what we want to get. The truth hurts but what local saffers should spend more time looking in the mirror rather than pointing the fingers at others. For a start, get a better education, stop raping the women, stop drinking and get a job that would help this country. Any person caught committing a crime should be dealt with, whether local or foreigner period and no exceptions.

what makes you more south african than me apart from been born here? you speak the language...so do I!!! you know the music...so do I!!! you vote...so do I!!! you eat the local food...so do I!!! so please stop boasting that you are more south africans than people who came here from outside recently as it gets you know where but makes your argument look silly.

@naija4life.
I am not born in south africa but i have a clan which you cannot claim as a nigerian.
Why don't you go and generate work and income for nigerian economy. Your argument exposes how ignorant you are. I am not going to respond to your immatured silly arguments anymore.

Daring and taunting while hiding behind false addresses again, as usual. Keep it up until your day dawns. False address or not,you will account for all this c.rap like I have warned you bfore.

Whenever South Africans discuss issues to do with refugees and immigrants in S.A.,you are quick to label us as being xenophobic.This has been your shield against being held accountable for your destruction of our country.You are from a country that invented xenophobia in Africa,your Ghana must go xenophobia against Ghanians led by your government,is what we call truely evil xenophobia.
So,stuff you man.
