Safer, better roads for North West
NORTH West Premier Thandi Modise says the expansion of roads construction and maintenance will make roads in the province safer.
Modise said North West's roads would expand from 10 to 27, covering more than 1566km.
She said that negotiations concluded between South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral ) and the provincial department of public works, roads and transport guarantees the province a R1-billion saving in the medium term expenditure framework. This should make resources available for other pressure areas.
In terms of the five year road maintenance contract targeting main economic and social linkage roads announced by Modise in February, Sanral is required to sub-contract 80% of the work to local SMME's to clean drainage systems, fix potholes, fog sprays and re-seals.
"The model, as part of our public infrastructure delivery programme to contribute towards job creation, will ensure that we deliver quality roads within reasonable budgets and eliminate corruption associated with road construction," Modise said.
