Another heavy blow for ANCYL

ALREADY teetering on the brink, the ANC Youth League has been weakened even further following a decision by the ANC in Mpumalanga to disband its provincial executive.

The ANC's provincial executive committee took a decision over the weekend to effectively dissolve what was left of the youth league's executive structure in Mpumalanga.

ANC provincial secretary Lucky Ndinisa yesterday confirmed the decision to disband the youth league's PEC.

He said it had come to the attention of provincial leaders that the current youth league leadership was not compatible with the provisions of its constitution.

"According to the constitution of the ANC, the PEC is expected to play an oversight role with all its respective leagues," said Ndinisa.

"In terms of the youth league's constitution, in the event that 50% of provincial executive members resign there must be an immediate special congress (to elect new leadership)."

However, that would not favour the remaining PEC members or the national leadership, who are still loyal to expelled youth league president Julius Malema.

Malema was expelled earlier this year following numerous attempts to avert punishment.

In November last year, 11 Mpumalanga youth league PEC members resigned in protest against the sacking of former provincial secretary Johan Mkhatshwa.

He was accused of disobeying instructions not to back Premier David Mabuza. - molatlhwao@sowetan.co.za
