Teacher 'hits pupil with power cable'

May 18, 2012 | Tebogo Monama, Education Reporter | 17 comments

A NORTH West teacher is in hot water after stopping a fight between two schoolboys by allegedly hitting one of them with an electrical cable across the cheek.

ASSAULTED: The 10-year-old boy who was allegedly hit with an electric cable across the cheek by a teacher at a school in North West.

The 10-year-old pupil from a school in Molatedi, North West, was hit across the cheek with the cable last Saturday, allegedly by a teacher.

The boy's uncle said: "The child came back home with a mark across his cheek and told us what the teacher had done. He also told us that the same teacher always hit them. Sometimes she puts pens between their fingers and squeezes their knuckles".

Now the family is afraid the boy's existing ear problem will become worse as a result of the injury.

When the family went to complain the principal apparently told them he was tired of the teacher.

The boy's sister said: "The principal told us parents always complain that the teacher hits their children. He said he was tired of the complaints and we could do whatever we wanted".

North West education spokesman Gershwin Chuenyane said they were investigating the incident.

  • In March, a Brits teacher pleaded guilty at an internal education department hearing to assaulting a Grade 1 pupil.

The teacher, Tebogo Marothodi of Frikkie Smit Primary School in Skeerpoort, had a month's salary docked as punishment.

She still faces a criminal charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm in the Brits Magistrate's Court.

The child, who is eight years old, said he was hit five times with a blackboard duster on the right hand for being "rowdy in class".

The incident happened last year. - monamat@sowetan.co.za

its saddening that a provider of education resolved to violence. The teacher should be suspended for gross misconduct in public office, fined heavily and forced to re-do her PGCE (teacher-training programme). She should not be fired, but relocated with severe warning of her conduct in future
