'Blue light' gang on the prowl
A GANG posing as policemen has been targeting the East Rand and Johannesburg's northern suburbs
"This gang is carrying high-calibre weapons," said acting provincial police commissioner, Major-General Pumza Gela.
The areas being targeted were Benoni, Germiston, the N17, Beyers Naude Drive, and the N14 near Dieplsoot.
In the past seven days, five cases were reported and the modus operandi was similar in each case.
In one of the latest incidents, Anglican priest and former Sowetan political journalist Jo Mdhlela was hijacked last week near his home in Fairleads, Benoni.
Mdhlela was stopped by a white hatchback sounding a police siren and flashing blue lights. He initially thought it was the police but was confronted by about five men armed with high-calibre assault rifles. He was robbed of his wallet and cash and the criminals made off with his Mercedes-Benz.
