Cops nab man taking 'free' Metro ride
It is alleged that the man was in cahoots with a Metro Police officer who would "borrow" him the vehicle to use for transporting schoolchildren for a fee. It is also alleged the officer would take back the vehicle when the petrol tank was empty and refill it with a municipal petrol card
AN EKURHULENI man has been arrested for driving a Metro Police department vehicle illegally.
The man was nabbed yesterday by members of the department's community liaison unit.
The department's (EMPD) spokesman Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng was cagey with details, but confirmed the arrest. He would only say that "internal processes" were unfolding.
Mokheseng said the man was charged with driving a state vehicle without authorisation and reckless and negligent driving "because he was found driving badly".
"A full investigations will verify all the claims and allegations," he said.
It is alleged that the man was in cahoots with an EMPD officer - who is known to Sowetan - who would "borrow" him the vehicle to use for transporting schoolchildren for a fee.
It is also alleged the officer would take back the vehicle when the petrol tank was empty and refill it - allegedly using a municipal petrol card.
Sowetan has learnt that the man has allegedly been driving the vehicle since January.
Mokheseng could not confirm this, but said: "The investigation will reveal what was going on. We (are) actually trying to locate the vehicle on our systems because it is not part of the new batch.
"This is an old car and I do not think it was being used by our officers anymore."

Mr Mokheseng, the condition of the car and whether it was in regular use is completely irrelevant. You have learned well from your bosses on how to introduce total red herrings. There are principles involved.... like abuse of state assets paid for with tax revenue.... to name but one. And then the "bottomless petrol tank" so kindly sponsored by the municipality? Is that also ok because the car was not being used a lot in the department? I'm more angry at the official who did the lending, than with the borrower. Who knows how many more vehicles, PCs, printers or whatever are being artfully deployed "at grassroots level" in this way.Report Abuse

Whenever I hear stories like this, I wonder what else is going on. This kind of corruption is being driven by a culture of entitlement and also an attitude of "if the bosses are stealing then why not me".Report Abuse

Nothing new here. Military vehicles as well as government ones are abused with inpunity and we have to foot the bill.Report Abuse

Yes you have to be cagey Inspector cause you don't know whether to press reckless driving or unauthorised use of the vehicle. The car does not appear on your system. Why? yet the car fuel tank has been filled and refilled again and again using the Municipality Petrol Card. You all have to take the responsibility here.Report Abuse

Is this another kind of service delivery to people. Goverment officials can really amaze you at times i mean, how do you answer this. Some stuff we do for backyard money can really destroy u and even the person who have been driving this car knowing very well that its no right.Report Abuse
