"The ongoing ritual k1llings are signs that people are still backward and holding to the old practices"
Then all people should leave their religions and spiritual practices as they are all based on old myths and are old practices also. Like it says in the article this is money m0tivated and has nothing to do with old practices as all forms of religions and spiritual practices are old practices, to say people are backward is insinuating that old people in ancient times were not intelligent and had useless spiritual practices. I do believe in traditional healers and consult them occasionally, I agree that the council is not doing enough. My traditional doctor has a certificate from the Healers' council to show that she is not bogus. There should be some measures to curb these bogus doctors Report Abuse

I too am a firm believer in herbal remedies as our family has its own herb lore. The idea that someone can just start dispensing 'mootie' without even having anyone vouch for their ability is too scary for words. You can seriously harm someone if you don't know what you are doing.
The council has to stop sleeping whilst eating our contributions and start to do something about this Report Abuse

I totaly agree, going to a traditional healer does not mean you are bewitched or you want to get rid of a tokoloshe. It's just alternate medicine.
Traditional healers are not witchdoctors . A person normally does not
choose to become a healer , but rather follows a calling (thwasa), which can be
disobeyed only at risk of serious (sometimes fatal) illness. Report Abuse

Shredder, many people use herbal remedies that have been passed down in the family for generation. Or, like me, prefer to avoid conventional medicine, and so read or research and then use various foodstuffs or herbs for their preventative qualities. Knowledge of herbs and their properties is not the private domain of "sangomas". Report Abuse

Read my comment you barbarian, I'm saying this is money m0tivated, traditional healing has nothing to do with killing people for their parts, old practices as it's put in this article like all religions which fall under old practices do not teach or instruct people to make medicine out of human parts. What you are saying like your ignorant ancestors who never took the time to understand African Metaphysics and came hear with their fary-tale superstition have always seen our religions as being barbaric and uncivilised, so I don't expect you to think of our traditions and religions as being peaceful and good willed because you have made up your mind that our spiritual believe is ev1l. Cornelius, I think it safe to say that there have been mavericks on the fringe of true traditional healing for as long as the tradition has existed, as in any other industry. Just so the old wild west and our very own hinterland farms in days of yore had their fair share of so-called "snake-oil peddlers" and bogus healers. So one can't tar the genuine article under the same brush as the often criminal by-products. As far as faith in "body parts" is concerned one needs to be careful of being racially smug. For example, the use of (and trade in) religious relics (bone from the finger of Christ, and such fancies) and various "nostrums" was part and parcel of orthodox Catholicism for centuries. All cultures and all races have their lunatics and opportunists that trade on the superstitions of others. So let's steer clear of racial nonsense here, if you don't mind. Report Abuse

The word muti simply means medicine, it can be herbal muti or some totem made of animal skin to represent the ceremonial part which the one who takes part in will ware, for you to think muti only implies using human parts for medicinal purpose show how little effort you have taken to understand our medicinal culture which has nothing to do with the k1lling of humans, Dingaka and I'Sangoma are the once who use herbal and animal totems as part of their ritual and medicinal practices, using human parts is plain bad luck and ev1l which our healer discourage against. You are comparing apples and pears.
The use of body parts is not 'medicine'. Comparing a sangoma who has to rely on the good graces of his ancestors with a baloi who tries to harness evil forces is like comparing christianity with satanism. It boils down to superstition. I may not believe that nailing a human tongue under my front porch will bring me luck but then again, I don't really believe that saying 10 hail Marys is going to absolve me of all sin either.
