This is what happens when you allow COSATU to get too powerful.

South Africa is uncompetitive, without our gold and platinum & the respective overvalued market prices of these commodities, South Africa is merely another Greece.

We dont have a competitive workforce, we dont have a industry that has comparative advantage or absolute advantage to any of our competitors, and our political grip over Africa is also on the decline as the rise of Nigeria, and in the long run, Angola & Egypt will by a long shot overtake us as important representatives of this continent.

Jeez. 34% more than the private sector? What absolute bull. People doing similar work to mine in private sector companies earn a great deal more than I do.

South Africa would of been a much more wealthy nation today had we undertaken a productive route over a welfare route.

But we all know that a ANC vote = welfare

Need i explain anymore?

================================================================================

And the ruling party undertook a short-run temporary solution to reducing unemployment.......................by over inflating our public sector (instead of investing in the private sector to create more sustainable jobs that dont put pressure on the fiscal budget) and welfare grants.................by making people become reliant on unproductive subsidies (thats puts immense pressure on our fiscal budget), Only the sick, physically disadvantaged and elderly, should be allowed to live on welfare grants.

The problem lies in the fact that the ANC failed to facilitate a private sector that could grow fast enough to dent the unemployment rate fast enough.

"South Africa's formal sector often overpays those with relatively few skills, while those with skills are often underpaid in relative terms, the 2012 South African Employment Report shows". i think you fall within the Skilled labour and publuc sector often get paid some of their salary in benefits which you do not get as cash. check your employer's contribution to your pension fund you'll see what i'm talking about.

Mogwapatholo: Thanks for your comment. I do fall within the "skilled labour" sector. But I am quite clear about my view that I am underpaid compare4d to equals in the private sector, and I DOP take the "benefits" you mention into account. I must point out that many of the benefits I think you refer to do not always apply. I have no medical aid. I get a pathetic housing allowance. My pension has just been raided by the eToll contribution. I CAN DO SUMS!

I would really like to know how true this article is, if there is any truth to it they would have obviously used an average, the problem is that it could be 100% true when one look at the bloated salaries of cadre's that is put into the system. I think you may be one of the unlucky honest people who got his job and salary on the honest ways.

Personally I don't think much decent research was done. But I do speak under correction. The jump between salary levels from level 10 upward is very big. High ranks earn a shitload, and of course that is exactly where incompetent cadre deployment is taking place, even in the DA controlled W Cape where I am.

So if you are unskilled then you get a higher salary working for government but if you are skilled then you get a lower salary if you work for government. That explains much.

@ The-Rothschilds,

I have been been to both Angola and Egypt very recently and I assure you they wil not come close ro SA any time soon. Angola is going the dictaror route with 1% of the top stealong all the oil and diamond money. Egypt, well what can I say, their religious stance will keep them back for many years.

But I agree thank Cosatu and the unions for SA not being competative.

The figures are accurate but it is also easy to see why people recacts this way. They have no idea how our salary bills effect costings. And what salaries for unskilled labour is suppose to be.
