Another newborn baby abandoned in Soweto

RESCUED: 'A 13-year-old boy noticed a plastic bag with something moving in the bag'

A new born baby boy was found in a plastic bag on Tuesday morning in Dhlamini, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

“Around 10am, a 13-year-old boy was walking around Dhlamini when he noticed a plastic bag with something moving in the bag. He ran and fetched an older man,” said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

“They found a baby boy who is one-day old and police were called. The ambulance arrived and the boy was taken to hospital for treatment. A case of child abandonment was opened,” he said.

The mother’s whereabouts are unknown.

This was the second time a baby was abandoned in Soweto in less than a week, with a one-day-old baby left on a doorstep in Zola late Sunday evening.

“Police have noticed several cases of child abandonment even in the last week. We appeal to the community to please assist us in finding the mothers of these children,” said Makhubela.
