THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo has criticised the "meagre" payment of just more than R2-million to the Molekana clan for land dispossessed from them and on which Anglo Platinum has a mining operation outside Mokopane in Limpopo.

COSATU is all over the show lately, is it a labour movement, politcal party or NGO? you VAVI, SDUMO and your boys must engage GOVT on LABOUR BOKING and stop being so REACTIVE on communities that accepted the offer, are you trying to say they were missled?Report Abuse

Cosatu jumping in before knowing what they are talking about again. I doubt they have even spoken to any of the land claimants.According to the original story - Anglo paid that to the 54 members (more to be paid when the other claims are verified) . They also paid 4.3 million to the communities where they were moved to. They also contracted to put in an internet cafe and a community centre. They also opened their labour programmes to the community and are going to be paying rent to the communities.
The claimants didn't want the land as they felt that would cause clan fights so what more would Cosatu like the mine to do?

@MommaCThanks for the info, I think SOWETAN is also missleading radicals like my self they need to have both sides of the story. However MOMMA I doubt if the claimant would not want the land due to clan fight, the land is a very sensitive issue amongst clans and business must not ignore that fact before purchasing. the land has minerals I dout if its worth 6bars.

MorenaWaPoleloThe clan leader said that they had seen a lot of the other land claims in the area create a lot of infighting and the land being unused whilst the beneficiaries just got poorer. There was also an issue with the vil1age that took them in when they were kicked off the land. Somehow the clan chiefs of the vi1lage that took them in seems to think they are now under their 'rule' and the land should be managed by them and not the claimants. I presume there has been inter=marriages and all sorts of other integration so maybe they were really looking to avoid a family type feud. Either way, it was their land and their decision and I think the mine has been fair.

Why are they only making noise after this payment is done. Some one must intervened and throw the decision to pay this clan such a small fee for land, thrown out of court.
Stupid people, how can they be happy for sharing a stupid R2M?

@MommaCIm of the view that extensive consultation should be done so that the clan recieves what the fair and just...I know Anglo they had the same excuse in DRC where people were brushed with a couple of dollars aside because of the so called in fighting. Due dilegance must be afforded to this community as I doubt if the price is fair!!!

MorenaWaPoleloI guess it is what the community wanted so our opinion is irrelevant. They seem happy with it and (if Anglo keep their promises) it will certainly uplift the entire area so it really isn't our place to judge. I was just unhappy that Cosatu (who has absolutely no business getting involved with this) went off on a rant without even bothering to check on the facts. A bit like Vavi and his VAT foolishness

the rural development people must stop doing this incompetent and shoddy job to our fellow people , they are the people who should be in the fore front advising this poor community how to rebuild their community depleted by aprtheid. First they should have advised them to acquire shares from the Anglo for exploiting their resources since 1960 back dated, secondly Trust Fund for this community should be set up to assist this community in respect of building schools, Technical colleges , clinics, bursaries for tertiary studies for children coming from that community. I very disappointed that we have people who are so incompetent like that coming from rural development , disgracing indeed. MEC Ms Rosina Mogotlane who handed over this land should be fired she is incompetent , nt strategic in the reconstruction and development of the society previous dehumanised by apartheid, we are going nowhere with such low thinking woman in the fight against unemployment, poverty, hunger etcReport Abuse

Anglo managed to benefit from the infighting of the community. Shows how important unity is. Mining in S.A. is worth more than 2.5 trillion dollars. Not rands. Will be interesting to know how much the mine is going to benefit from mining in this place. I still believe these are peanuts and the mine took advantage because the community lacked knowledge. These communities children will in the future blame their parents or forefathers for taking such decisions.

DandanOh blow it out your backside.
How does a snot nosed little git like you think that you are so much better than the vil1age elders and that you must treat them like brain damaged children who have to do what you tell them to?
YOU want them to get shares. THEY don't want shares. Now where do you get the audacity to think you are suddenly Voster and have some kind of 'right' to force them to do your bidding?.

Its called day light robery what Anglo are doing. They are reaping millions of Rands, evade tax and leave the poor families, who are the real land owners with an empty bowl. Why not get shares, and get the same amount every year, than just get the same amount just ONCE! The only country so far that has a sound policy in terms of mining is Botswana, where mining companies would share spoils on a 50-50 basis, hence it is the country with the largest foreign currency reserves in Africa, surpassing Africa's largest economy, South Africa! African resources for the west to continue plundering?Report Abuse

I agree. The resources of the country should benefit the people of the country. S.A. has been used as a cash cow by foreign companies for many years and this should not continue. Shares are a much better deal than cash.

You don't know the full details of what they got in return for the leasing of their land so how can you now call a whole group of people stupid?

DandanI dont recall Malema, Magaqa and Shivambu claiming that they are the champs for the poor. That was just a media selling pitch. If ANCYL says pay the communities better then that will defeat their stand which is nationalisation. They can only cry out nationalisation which they don't have power to change it. Only the government can.
Its deals like this that make the call for nationalisation more stronger. Communities ripped off at the expense of overseas companies and some few well connected S. Africans.
By the way you must remember that Shivambu and Malema have been silenced.
